Getting to the tops of the spindly desert towers of the Southwest has alway been a challenge and an adventure, from John Otto on Independence Monument in 1911, through David Brower on Shiprock in 1939, through Layton Kor in the '60s, up to the present day with hard, scary, free climbing epics, in the most colorful scenery on Earth.
