Where to live in CT

Oops yeah I forgot about Waterbury, its absolutely terrible.
The nicest near Hartford are certainly West Hartford, Glastonbury, Southington

Another possibility I've been thinking of is living halfway between Boston and Uconn and commuting to Boston where there are a lot of jobs. Is the traffic gonna be too bad for this or are there ideal places to live. Google says 1 hour 30m between the two.

I am a big fan of the Groton and Mystic areas...good climbing and you are close to the beach.

So far, I'd say the advice you've gotten from us Nutmeggers has been pretty spot-on.

Most of the trad is located in the central part of the state, so anywhere in the New Haven to Hartford to Waterbury triangle (excluding those three cities, hopefully) will put you close to much of our state's good climbing.

If at all possible, stay the hell out of Fairfield County (unless you're independently wealthy and get your jollies from sitting in traffic all the damned time). I-95 pretty much sucks the entire length of the state, so look at staying north of the Merritt Parkway (Rt. 15) or, better yet, north of I-84. (If your wife's gonna be at UConn, you're not gonna want to be down by the shore, anyway.)

West of Hartford, you're closer to the Gunks and the ADK's, but farther from the Whites. East of Hartford is the opposite, so think about where your out-of-state climbing destinations will likely be and plan accordingly.

Mr. Cracklover and I will be moving to the New Haven area in the Spring. I work too much to be able to get outside on weekdays... so given that we'll be living somewhere around New Haven what is our best option for an after work climbing gym? And by best I mean long lead-able routes. Thanks.

@ SpencerB
I haven't been able to find any good photos or gym specs for either Prime Climb or Carabiners Fairfield.

Can you describe either or both of them? THanks!

Southington or West Hartford, TONS of good climbing around there.....in Southington your 10 minutes from Ragged, East Peak, and numerous other areas, 4 hrs to North Conway, 3 hrs 15 mins to Rumney, 3.5 hours to Northern VT, 1.5 hours from the Gunks, etc etc. Good gyms within 20 mins as well, and both are actually quite nice towns, albeit on the more expensive side. There's enough climbing to occupy you for years though, believe me I know....and traprock is awesome (besides the annoying anchor setups and lack of bolts).
Hope the move goes well, if you need a tour I'm around every few weeks or so.

My post (see above a few lines) is not from a year ago... thanks for the info on climbing areas. If you can tell me about the gyms I'd appreciate it also.

the City Climb gym in New Haven is OK if you like staying close to home, Prime Climb is a slight step up but 15 miles away then there is the new Glastonbury gym 25 miles away that I have not been to and is supposed to be really good/modern but a bit pricey. I have heard nothing good about Carrabiners.

I was surprised to get a notification on it! My visa still hasn't arrived, nothing happened for months the department of state had massive delays. We're hopefully going to live in Glastonbury. I was at Central rock in January and it is one of the best walls I have been to ... even though it didn't even have that many routes set yet and the big overhang was being reset so couldn't even climb on that!

Mrs Cracklover, I was at City Climb in December and again 3 days ago after 3 months of regularly going to Prime Climb. City Climb routes are shorter and were the same as they were 3 months ago - except some tape was missing. Prime Climb changes their routes much more often.

Prime Climb also sells some gear (no pro) and shoes. City Climb does not.

OTOH, City Climb has some exercise equipment (Treadmill, Bike, elliptical) that you can use.

I have not been to the gym in Glastonbury or to Carabiners and am not associated with any gym other than being a customer.
