Gunks Mentor

Hey all,

I've been climbing about a year now, and I'm more than obsessed. I don't have many people to climb with, but I have a rope and top rope rack. I'll hopefully be learning to make gear anchors in late March or early April with a guide, but if I can find a mentor perhaps that can be avoided ;).

I'm stoked to learn and try every form of climbing, but as a New Yorker who has a lot of friend and family ties to New Paltz, trad is the next step. I'd be extremely grateful to climb with anyone who is willing to teach me. I'm a bit wary because my current partner is still new to trad and we're young and a bit reckless, so it would be good to learn from multiple sources.

I will hopefully have a research internship in Mohonk Preserve this summer, so I will be availible whenever possible come may. I go to school in Binghamton now, and I am trying to convince a few people to take a few trips to the Gunks with me later in the semester, but we'll see how it goes!

Edit: Just to share where I am right now, I can top rope up to about 5.8 in Peterskill, set top rope anchors using static line, and I also cook like a fiend -Just let me know the dish and you'll get dinner for your services!

Hit me up as well. I and several friends of mine try to hit the Gunks as much as we can summers. SOme of us were novices and have been coming up thru the ranks well learning skills, etc.

You're welcome to join me/us. We all climb well together, always try to have fun - don't let ego's get in the way of climbing, always try and climb and belay safe as well. We try not to take outselves too seriously BUT - we do strive to improve on our skills and climb better and harder routes still.

You'd be more than welcome to join in. I am from near Alban, NY area.

I'm new outdoor climbing as well and I've climbed at Rumney as well as red rocks, gunks, peterskill, west point, and a few other places. Been sport climbing for the past year or so, and would love to learn how to set up anchors and gear placement for trad. If u guys ever set up something please let me know as well. I'm from the nyc area.

I live in New Paltz and climb every week when the weather is good(sometimes even when it's not.) Hit me up with a PM if you're strung for a partner. I have a full rack with a few doubles, etc.

Simon is a good partner, you'll learn a lot, be safe, and have a great time climbing! He kind of smells bad, but you'll get used to it...just kidding, ha ha
