First of all here is the link to gov website.
Now does anyone know what is going on with climbing there? I know the echo canyon trail head is down but can you still hike in through cholla and climb?

Follow up question where do you guys take people for their first outdoor climb? The monk was awesome for that.

I'm pretty stoked on them opening up more parking.

That place has something seriously wrong with it! Once we got caught in the slow moving traffic jam where people actually toole the parking lot waiting for others to be done recreating! So I got out of there and wondered (for next time) where could I park and ride a bike ? The hike may be a trek but if you find a spot to set out from, keep it your secret! One day I may climb there but for now let those line-er-uppers have it!

The City of Phoenix has gone through a long process of trying to figure out what is best to do with the Echo Canyon parking and trail situation. They finalized a plan and the area is currently closed. It will be reopened when the work is complete. I do not believe they will allow folks to hike up and over (Cholla to Echo) in order to climb. Try Pinnacle Peak Park and the new Tom's Thumb Trail Head for a great selection of close-in rock climbing.

Here are more details.

I asked one of the rangers for clarification (can we park somewhere else) and he said not only is the parking lot closed but that side of the mountain is closed for trail maintenance, etc..

Ya - no doubt - I wouldn't recommend climbing there for most people. I live only a few miles away so it's easy to learn exactly when parking is available and when to avoid the place.
