Patagonia R1 hoody or something similar

I tried the Desna, just way too warm for me for any winter approach even with temp in the teens unless it's windy. I can't imagine wearing that for temp in the 40s unless I'm just standing around.
I think I'm gonna give the NWA a try since it's less warm than R1 hoody, which might be perfect for those long approaches.

Spent the last four seasons in my R1 Hoody and it's my best piece. Bought it 50% off at the end of season sale.

Took it up the Steck-Sal twice as well as all kinds of other wide, thrutchy, squeeze and OW stuff during a season when I got the bug for that style, and it is still in excellent condition. Holy shit have I abused it.

R1 Hoody and Nano 1/4 zip have been perfect Yosemite set up for me for fall/winter/spring. Clip the Nano to the harness when warm, and go.

I ordered a NW Alpine Spider Lite hoodie. Thought it might be good for warmer temps than my Patagonia R1 hoodie.

I wear a Size Large in the Patagonia R1, but I ordered a Size XL in the Spider, based on the "athletic fit" descriptor.

It's way too small for me. I can squeeze into it, but it's really skin tight, uncomfortably so.

Sad, because I liked the piece and it probably would have been my R1 replacement for warmer weather.

Oh well. sending it back today.

Just my observation on NWA sizing.
I also wear a Lg R1 and have had both a Lg and a XL Black Spider hoody from NWA. The Lg fit me fine as a base layer next to the skin. The Xl was too big. I am 6'1" and 190.

I have to chime in with my support for the NWA spider lite hoody. After having the R1 for many years, I decided to try the spider lite. I am glad I did. I liked the spider so much that I sold my r1. I run warm, so having a lighter fabric is great for me. If it gets windy I just throw on a windshell.

If you are looking for a great softshell hoody (full zip) that is windproof, try looking around for the Mountain Hardwear Transition jacket. It is made from windstopper, but has breathable panels under the arms. I am surprised at how much I like this jacket. Too bad they do not make it anymore.

For those looking for a wool hoody, check out the smartwool midweight hoody. I have one on order. $56 is a great deal.

Check these guys out - they will be coming out with a R1 hoodie like garment but with a water resistant attribute. Made here in the US.

Pretty sweet.

Anyone want to take a chance on one of these and report back?

Blackhawk Grid Hoody

- hooded grid fleece
- zip chest pocket
- thumb loops

On sale for $35 plus shipping. Damn. No idea how heavy the material is, though, or how well it wicks. Or how it fits -- "athletic" might mean different things to cops than climbers...

Bump. Any new recommendations for early 2013? I'm giving special though to the RAB Baseline...

Cap 4 expedition weight Hoody. It has thumb elastic loops instead of holes in the wrists and zips straight up the front. Slightly lighter weight than the R1. Most other options on the market are full zip which adds bulk around the waist.

Worth taking a look at the Piton Hybrid as well. $100 and change on line.

Was looking at getting a backup to my R1 Hoody (1st generation!), it has served me very well but starting to show its age. The newer versions of the R1 just aren't the same, the thumb loops now look like an afterthought with that thick turnback/seam in the middle of your palm.
Patagonia had come out with the Cap 4 hoody, but they seem to be discontinuing it (or getting rid of it for summer).

I'm trying to find a deal on the Piton Hybrid, if the fit is similar, I'll be a happy man again, too bad it's a full zip.

If you want a wool version, I've seen that Smartwool makes one. It's a little pricey though.

Marmot Thermo hoody is a nice alternative to R1.

Here is an article describing it:

Also worth checking out is the Pata Cap 4 Hoody

Pata Cap4 Hoody

It's like an R1 Hoody "Light" - I have both the R1 and the Cap 4 Hoody and find the slightly lighter Cap 4 to be a wider range piece for ROCK climbing. I also like the centered zipper on the Cap 4 Hoody. Don't Get me wrong, I GET why the R1 has the offset zipper but for everyday use, the offset zipper is a PITA.

You want a Medium. I'm, 185 and 6' and wear Pata Large in almost everything including the R1.

I would think this MEC product is closer to the R1 hoody than either the T2/T3 hoodies:

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
