@ Stephen and Camhead. The Bar (Quinta La Carreta) where the abductions occurred is about 200m from the entrance of La Posada, the main place where people stay at EPC. Homero's is directly across the street from this bar. I was in EPC to Jan 10 and was staying in the Casita closest to this place (80m away - checked with Google Earth) . The party's held at this place scared the crap out of me.

Ok, yeah, I remember that bar.

I'm a bit confused, though. Both the article linked most recently in this thread, and an article linked in another thread on mountainproject say that the band was abducted from the city of Sabinas Hidalgo, which is NOT the same Hidalgo near Potrero, it is like 50 miles away or so.

From Mexican news El Indipendiente:

Sources from the State Investigation Agency confirmed Monday evening finding 12 bodies on a ranch located at kilometer 92 of the highway Monterrey-Monclova, including four of the dead are identified as group members Kolombia Kombo.

The bodies were recovered from the bottom of a well, near where they had disappeared days before the twenty components (twelve musicians and eight of his team) of the band.

On Friday, relatives of the artists complained that they were kidnapped after they liven up a private party at a place called La Carreta, in the municipality of Hidalgo.

Neighbors of where the group performed at the Thursday night reported hearing gunshots around 4 am, followed by the sound of several vehicles at full speed. Relatives of disappeared on Friday filed an official complaint, having received no response to their calls after the show and meet the artists vehicles stationed at the doors of the bar.

Since 2011, the Kombo Kolombia vallenato interpreted both in large venues like bars for small presentations. His reputation was on the rise after participating in "Monday cholos," a local television program, and every Sunday evenings enlivened by "The California Dancing Club".

"We have as concrete data, it is located is a Ferris wheel, located on a farm at kilometer 90 on the road to Monclova Mina where so far, as of yesterday, had removed four of these bodies where it appears that it is the people belonging to this group, "he explained.

The state official said the search continued work on the ranch, as the wheel in question has a significant water depth, which has complicated efforts by the authorities.

When questioned about how the events occurred, Domene Zambrano explained that the group was presented Kolombia Kombo at the bar La Carreta, a warehouse located in the municipality of Hidalgo, "which took place this party, they manifest (the witnesses) arriving several armed men, about 10 in four vehicles and undergo (and staff members of the group) and deprived of freedom on Friday evening.

"This occurs on Friday evening, about eight or nine at night and since then began to spread the rumor that had been deprived of freedom. Started getting some complaints as authority by disappearance some of the family on Saturday. was was working on this yesterday and it was already aware of this person who managed to escape and as we start to search for the bodies of these people, "he said.

Finally, he said that, according to the statements of the member who escaped, blindfolded and taken by dirt roads to a place he did not identify, where he heard shots and a conversation in which his captors were discussing where to leave the bodies of his colleagues, but said that at the time, the witness in question has not said how managed to evade and seek in a nearby ranch.

"They brought a shirt alluding to the name of the group and, well, for now are these four, seemingly three with this dress," he said, and confirmed that the survivor is under guard of the National Defense Secretariat, authority took up the matter.

Domene released the names of those identified so far, but said that the work of other bodies and search for recognition continues. Not rule out that there were more deaths in the same place.

Why would anyone kill a band? I guess they were dealing drugs ...

What a sad state of affairs.

So what's the story on this in the Potrero, Ed? You haven't said anything about that and you live right there. What's the truth?

Answer:
I just read this book called El Narco by a guy named Grillo, apparently the music scene in Mexico has all kinds of entwinement with the cartels, they have this whole narco-ballad type of music where they glorify their gang over the adversary. The narco guys even pay bands to make music about them. And they murder guys who make them unhappy.

A little bit like gangster rap, but they have to pick a side and often get killed over it...NarcoCorrido - Wiki

It's a good book, check it out if you have the time. Amazon - El Narco

Bonus points for the English translation.

Maybe everyone should stay away from Yosemite this year, it's so close to all the mayhem happening in the Stockton/Merced area.

Yeah, it's a tradition that goes back to Prohibition, and beyond. A colleague of mine wrote his dissertation on narcocorridos.

However, a few articles that I read specifically stated that this group decidedly stayed away from the narco ballad genre. Tying them to this is like tying Jam Master J to Gangsta Rap.

I'm not sure why all the rumors around this thing happening at Homeros but from what I'm reading it happened in Sabinas Hidalgo and the bodies where found in Minas. (which honestly doesn't make a lot of sense seeing that Hidalgo is much closer to Minas as Sabinas Hidalgo) I also understand that this band had ties to the drug trade in some way. I'm planning on going there in 4 weeks and the inital reports freaked me out. Now I'm thinking it's the same ol' Mexico(well same ol' Mexico post 2008), travel in the morning, use a low profile vehicle, don't leave Potrero or go into town at night and you'll more likely be fine.

THIS IS THE IMAGE IF IT DID IN FACT TAKE PLACE IN SABINAS HIDALGO AND NOT HIDALGO.

Large Red Circle = Sabinas Hidalgo (where supposedly the Kidnapping took place) ; Small Red Circle (where the bodies were found) ; Blue Arrow (where Potrero Chico is located)

Well what is this all about if the location is wrong?

This is what I'm trying to figure out. I really want to find out if the band was, in fact, gigging and then kidnapped within a stones throw of Potrero (as Ed and a few other have said), or if it was 60 miles away in Sabinas Hidalgo. It is possible that the news sources mistook it, and erroneously said it happened in Sabinas, I guess. It would not make much sense to take bodies from Sabinas to Mina.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
