Winter Camping in the Ouray area

I am planning to take a trip to Ouray Jan. 18-21. I am a big fan of winter camping and not really looking to stay at a hotel or anything like that.

Previously I have camped at the Orvis hot springs. The place is awesome but I just don't get that winter camping experience I am looking for.

I was wondering if anyone had any beta on a good spot that is decently accessible. I am not looking to hike 5 miles in the snow due to the fact I want to spend most of my day climbing in the park. An area where hot springs are accessible is a must.

Send me a PM if you want to share your spot and don't want to post it for the world.

Cheers,

Drive up Camp Bird Rd. There is some open campgrounds up there, if you have a good truck you may be able to get directly into a spot, otherwise you may need to camp at the parking lot or hike 1/4 mile.

ridgway is colder if thats what youre looking for. near the river or reservoir should be frigid during ice fest. -35 sometimes, hows that for a winter camping experience? ouray can be like 25 degrees warmer, lame.

No, but they are free. Alas, ya can't have everything.

go up camp bird road and spend the night at angel creek. its free in the winter, and its quite nice.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
