Ha ha.... one of my friends drives a school bus for BVSD, and during his training the supervisor told the class that, according to local statistics, the driver most likely to ignore the red lights and stop sign on a bus is someone in a Toyota Prius.

Golden is not really the place for the person that is looking at the trade offs between Golden and Boulder.

Tevis Blom wrote:Golden, as mentioned, is actually pretty nice but it is definitely a cookie cutter McMansion type of town. Good luck, the mountains are great.
Tevis, seems like you've only seen Golden from highway 93. It's very much not a cookie cutter town, although like most places these days there's some of that on the outskirts. Golden is a great small town, very real with a solid community, and incredible climbing options all around.

Oh nice, we bought our house in Golden 6 months ago and can't believe how much we like it.

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of great things about Golden as well, so we'll be adding it to the list. We're coming back out this weekend to hopefully lock down a place and sign a lease. It's up between Denver, Boulder, and Golden Right now. I'd really rather live in a smaller city, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of availability this time of year except in Denever. We'll see how it goes. I'm putting in my notice at work today!

If you're coming back again, here's a list of fantastic restaurants that haven't yet been mentioned:

Zoe Ma Ma - Traditional Chinese street food cooked by the 83 year old owner. It's just off of Pearl on 10th St. No Mu Shu or Sesame Chicken here.

Restaurante 100% Mexicano - The best mexi in Boulder. It's tucked behind Sports Authority on the corner of Iris and 28th St. It's in the hallway right across from the DMV office where you get your driver's license. This restaurant is so authentic that there is no cheese anywhere.

Pupusa's - Up on N. Broadway, North of Violet and South of Yarmouth. Great food from El Salvadore as well as good street tacos.

Rincon Argentino - Great new place with Argentinian-style empanadas. Mmmmm. This place is tiny. On the corner of Arapaho and Folsom.

Tibet Kitchen - Corner of Arapaho and Folsom. Unbelievable momos but they make them fresh so they take 20 minuted to get to the table.

Good luck,
Mal

Anyone have tips or job suggestions for a Mech/Aerospace Engineering Masters grad trying to move to the mountains?

Mal,

Thanks for all the good food tips. Those places sound awesome! Any good Vietnamese in Boulder that you know of?

Wade,

Just saw you've been working in the real estate sector in the past. I work as a residential real estate agent in Denver and would be happy to talk with you about the Denver real estate market and job possibilities in brokerage if that's something you're interested in. Feel free to send an email and we can set something up for when you're in town.

Cheers,

David

Hey Mike, I know next to nothing about Golden but I'd really like to check it out. We'll probably shoot over there on Sunday. Do you have any recommendations on neighborhoods we should check out?

I just want to thank everyone for all the great advice. It's been a big help and we finally got some stuff sorted out. This is the first time I've gotten to sit down and relax in a few days, but it was worth it. We ended up signing a lease with a really great landlord in South Boulder. While the city has it's positive qualities, it's negative ones are also obvious. We're hoping to buy a house next year and Golden will likely be our first choice. My girlfriend signed the contract with her employer so now I just need to find a job! Again, mucho gracias.

PS. chufftard, I got those pellets, you bring the pbr.

Honestly you probably won't even notice the negatives...they get lumped into what's called "normal life". And when you consider the positives and that people dream about vacationing to where you live, the negatives get lumped into what we like to call "Boulder Problems".

"Oh no I had to wait to get a beer at our 10+ breweries, oh no I had to wait in line for a climb at all the amazing spots within 15 minutes of my house". You get the drift. Complaining about the negatives is pretty foolish really. It's pretty tits here...

Scott, thats a great point. Here it's more like "Some shitty driver tried to run me over and I fell off my bike. Then a crackhead spit on me and stole it." This didn't happen to me personally, but it's probably not uncommon. Some one in Boulder said Denver was dirty and I laughed so hard I blew a snot bubble. I guess they've never been to Philly...

Yeah I'm from New England and compared to CT,MA, and NY...You can eat off the street in Denver. Well most of Denver. haha
