I spoke with my father last night (Dale Ebersbacher, who with my mother, Fran Ebersbacher, discovered the Ledges), and his exact quote was, "You wouldn't catch me up there in December."
Haha, so good! As if the kitty litter all over the ledges in the summer aren't interesting enough... After lucking out and successfully guessing my way through them, I was ready to change my name to Ebersbacher..
I don't know anything about Ebersbacher's Ledges in December.
However, last September I went to descend the trail after a Mt. Russell summit trip and I got caught in a really bad rain storm. The Ledges were one big waterfall. I didn't want to wait it out, it was late in the day, and I was still altitude sick. So I pushed my way down the creekbed through thick vegetation. Overall, it was a miserable experience.
My point is that the creek bed was a viable option as a last resort. I strung together various animal trails in between the torrential bushwhacking. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks Diana! Made a go at it, but the powder was too deep and light to get to the ledges in snowshoes...perhaps a blessing. I was hoping it would be iced over, but too early in the season.
@Chris: yeah the granite back in there is real chaucy...sketchy to climb through even with sticky rubber, but if it is covered in ice, crampons might make the going a little easier. Just not enough thaw-freeze cycles this time of year to make that happen.
I'll check back in on it late winter early spring.
Pushing straight up the drainage is the way to go during the winter. Willow wallowing is minimal with enough snow. The Ledges are not the way to go during winter months.
