Human Waste Disposal Bag Dispensers

My name is Andrew and I am working for the American Alpine Institute through the fall, winter, and spring in Las Vegas primarily.

Today I was working out in the Black Velvet and had an opportunity to fill the waste disposal bag dispenser, which was completely empty.

Please make use of these bags, and donate if you can. If you do not use your bag, please do your best to put it back in the dispenser.

I know that many of the dispensers are empty as they haven't been filled lately, but I hope to change that. Please, throughout the season, message me if you find empty dispensers and I will do my best to fill them as soon as possible.

Great to have some Northwest talent down here in the desert! Where are you getting the "rest stops"? I love those things and want the North Cascades National Park NCNP to go to them instead of those little blue bags they hand out with the twist tie....really?

Do we really have to put them back? I carry mine in my climbing bag and use it at appropriate times at other climbing areas that don't have facilities.

Yasso- Thanks for getting on that. Good to see guides taking initiative locally. Eric, feel free to keep it in your pack for future occasions, but also feel free to contribute to the cause @ DRS. Occasionally I've seen Restops @ NOCA, but they don't tend to stay in stock as long. Agree with ya on the blue bags...

Human waste disposal bags are fantastic, they are designed to use then take them with you to dispose of.
I was very disappointed and disgusted to find one last Tuesday below the 1 st tier at Avalon in Boulder canyon.
Unfortunately it is still there, it would be nice if whomever left it there would go get it, and while your there you might as well pick up the dog shit bags along the way in, thanks in advance.

Eric, you are certainly welcome to keep it and use it! My hope is that these things don't develop the grocery bag syndrome - you purchase a reusable grocery bag to be more eco-minded, only to forget it at home every time and end up using the plastic ones anyway.

If you definitely feel you will make use of it, by all means keep it. If you have a forgetful streak, leave it for someone else or for the next time you are out there.

I will be working at the first pullout tomorrow and plan to fill that dispenser as well. I walked passed it today and it was filled with trash, even though the box itself is locked. Unfortunate, however tomorrow it will be cleaned and filled.

I believe this will use up the current stock of wag bags provided by the LVCLC. I am not aware of how much has been donated and if we will be able to purchase more, but I will contact the LVCLC and see what we can do.

However, this is a good time to remind all that if you use these, please donate at Desert Rock Sports so that we can maintain a stock of these bags, and keep the dispensers full.

Sounds like an awesome addition to red rocks, I had a very unpleasant surprise while there several years ago. I did my best to bury it with rocks, but carrying it out would have been better. I also learned that sandstone is not a good natural toilet paper, especially when it crumbles.

Was out at the Black Velvet again today, dispenser has one bag left in it. I refilled it less than two weeks ago, so glad to see that people are making use of them!

On a side note, there was a front loader out there grating the road.

Thanks Andrew I have seen the waste disposal bags here in Eldo . People take them here just to have an extra one for themselves later. Pisses me off.

A new shipment of ReStop bags has been ordered and should be here soon. I can only assume all of the dispensers are empty. I will do my best to fill these in the coming month - please let me know if you come across a dispenser that is empty or would like to assist in filling them.

I would like to find a way to create a system to insure these dispensers are getting filled regularly. Any and all suggestions welcome.

As always, if you use the bags, consider making a donation to the LVCLC to continue maintaining their availability.

Hey man the dispenser out @ Kraft has been empty for several weeks. Do you want me to go ahead and fill this one with plastic grocery bags? I'm not sure if that's an acceptable substitute, but I'd rather use those than find more poop all over the place.

I'd love to help you keep these stocked - I live right outside RRC and am in the are several times a week. Just let me know how I can help.

I'm not sure where you are climbing or what the dispensers are like there. The dispensers in and around Red Rock National Conservation Area are large enough to hold 20+ bags pretty easily.

Also, to my knowledge, we have yet to have an issue with vandalism.

You are right, however, that finding a place to purchase these bags can be difficult. Also, the general public made up of climbers, hikers, and the like, are not all educated on proper waste management in the backcountry. Providing these to people is not only in an effort to keep human feces out of our recreation areas, but also to educate people on the importance of why we do this. Once enlightened, hopefully people will take it seriously on their own and do as you do and purchase their own. Until then, we hope to keep providing them and making them available.

Boulder Army Store usually stocks Restop, they are currently out, but on order. They do have similar crap-in-a-bag type receptacles, but no guarantees about not befouling your actual senses instead of just offending your eco-sense. Or scents.
