+1. I'm amazed by how often climbers overlook the amount they spend on gas to get somewhere, and leave that out of the cost analysis.

At my car's gas mileage, it probably costs me $4.50 in gas to drive to R&J and back from Golden. Driving to the new ET site will be less than $1.00 in gas (or I could bike). Then there is costs associated with wear and tear on the car, etc. In the winter, with a membership, you might go to the gym 2-3 times per week, so this would be 10 trips per month. Driving to R&J, this means $45/month just to drive to the gym and back--this is almost the cost of a membership!

I'd be more than happy to pay extra at a premier gym close to home.

Hopefully, though, the prices will be scaled to account for the local area. Do remember that pretty much everything is more expensive in the DC suburbs than in the Denver suburbs--climbing gyms included. I'm going to guess that prices at the new ET will be in line with the gyms in Boulder.

Agreed that the prices are more reflective of DC area cost than elitism. Not that there aren't elitist climbers at some of the ET gyms, but no more than any other gym I've been to in other parts of the country, and generally the ones who are most elitist are the ones who don't make it out of the gym much anyway. In my experience, ET gyms have consistently combined good physical layout with quality routesetting and an extremely welcoming staff. Not that I'll be catching the first plane out when it opens up, but I'm definitely looking forward to checking out the new location next time I'm in the area.

And I can't speak for the entire east coast, but Maryland at least does have plenty of year round climbing. Certainly a lot less potential for snowy rock here than my friends in CO generally deal with!

From what I understand about the initiation fee at most climbing gyms. Is that if u dont continue with the month to month plan. Then that initiation fee would have to be reinstated. Would be nice if they had a punch card or some kind of short term deal. Colorado is a sunshine state, over 360 days of it a year. For me I would only use it in the winter, on supper cold days.

We certainly will be. Our hiring process won't kick off until the spring at least, but we'll make announcements on our golden facebook page and jobs page on our website.

Are you guys going to be offering any childcare? This is a big potential benefit for those of us with little ones.

This is progress! I'm excited about this, about the Denver Bouldering Club's expansion, and about the fact that, according to Movement, this isn't changing the trajectory for them bringing a gym to Denver in the slightest! thegoodlifedenver.com/2012/…

Will this count as part of the curent multi-gym membership? I split my time between Boulder and Rockville and would love to transition seamlessly between the locations.

I can empathize as I have two little ones myself. At this point that issue is undecided however. A lot of it has to do with weighing pros and cons of how we use the space available to us.

It sure will, if you're a multi gym member you have full access to ALL Earth Treks Climbing Centers.

I lived in the DC area for five years and really enjoyed EarthTreks. Though I taught basic climbing movement at, and lived walking distance from SportRock, I would drive to Baltimore just to climb there. Look forward to seeing ET in the area!

"conveniently located near the intersection of Rt. 6, I-70 and C-470."

HAHHAHAHAHA!!! That's 3 minutes from our house off South Golden rd.!!! Fecking excellent!

Earth Treks - Please, Please, Please get some cool cracks in this place! Most gyms have none, some have one or two. Maybe something like the crack area at Momentum Gym Utah.

Can't wait!

I'm similarly stoked about the location. Depending on how tall the building it (i.e. if it is tall enough for me to get a line out sight over a small hill that is in the way), I may be able to see the building from my living room window.

We have cracks in all our gyms in Maryland. Wall design is long from finished, but in all likelihood we'll continue the trend and include cracks.

Cracks are almost never used in gyms. They add a nice aesthetic but trend to get polished and ignored.

I would be way (WAY) more psyched if you spent the extra money on ice holds.

And a really good air filtration system.

+1. While I do enjoy practicing rock climbing indoors, it would be awesome to have a section dedicated to practice ice climbing.
