The appeal of ice climbing

Agreed! Just back from Brighton saw the appeal. Cigarettes, Red bull, music streaming thru the Dr. Dre's in the line. Chair carries you to the top and you shoot Digi and stills with the 5D and the L series lens the whole way down. SICK!

Not an ice climber, but ice does sublimate, it's just harder to witness it happening. It's the reverse of the process that makes frost. You need very dry air and an energy source, such as bright sunlight. Dry ice sublimates so apparently because the ambient air provides all the energy the process needs to happen and air is relatively "dry" for carbon dioxide (only about 4%")

Sublimation of Ice.

"Sublimation occurs more readily when certain weather conditions are present, such as low relative humidity and dry winds. Sublimation also occurs more at higher altitudes, where the air pressure is less than at lower altitudes. Energy, such as strong sunlight, is also needed. If I was to pick one place on Earth where sublimation happens a lot, I might choose the south face of Mt. Everest. Low temperatures, strong winds, intense sunlight, very low air pressure—just the recipe for sublimation to occur."

In those situations, n00b could have a point (of course, there would be other problems concurrent to those conditions)
I can only assume, given your other worldly conditions, that a gamma ray burst has struck the vicinity of said ice formation causing immediate sublimation. And complete and utter destruction of the local environment.

Actually, ice sublimates to water vapor as well as liquid water at the same instant. When ice meets sun, this happens. Water has very different properties from other liquids on this planet. I would think if you wanted to quote science you would already know about the properties of water.

What's with all the snarkyness? I'm asking a valid question.

Climb ice, snow, mud, trees, roots and rock.

Then you can climb anything.

1) It's aesthetic: Look at these lines...

Ouray 2012

2) It's rhythmic: Kick, kick, kick, kick, stand-hipsthrust, swing

3) It's stress-relieving: other than chopping wood, when else do you get to swing sharp things and smash stuff productively?

4) It's easy

The only reason you ask is because you've never done it. Try it once an you'll get it. It's just beautiful.

Yes...ice climbing is pain and suffering, definitely not worth the time. Please stay at home and leave all the ice for us masochists that completely understand what it's all about. If you already hate winter then just stay at home, some people like it and others hate it. Do you ski? If you like other winter sports then it's great.

Just to clarify I'm only quoting you tits in support of your post, then answering the op's question.

OOOhhhhhh, but what if I want to walk around in 1,000 worth of gear carrying a pack with 2,000 worth of gear in the cold to fight over the same three threads of ice? What if I love masturbation but can't quite do that motion 200 times without serious ramifications? What if I adore the shape of an ice pick? How else will I make my non-masochists ego survive?

Why do people risk life and limb to rock climb? Why do people run to exhaustion so they can shoot spheres into nets or baskets? Why do people wake up ass-early in the morning to hike peaks for sunrise?

Because it's cool. Because it's pretty. Because it's fun. "Because it's there."

If you want a universal reason, I don't think there is one. To each his own, and may we all have a hell of a good time while doing it, whatever 'it' may be!

Again, asking why we ice climbing just like non-climbers ask us we we climb at all or like other people as builders why they like climbing buildings.

Sometimes we do certain thing for no reason, we are just follow out hearts and enjoy it. I am sure most experience ice climbers will say that they climb ice is not because it looks cool to someone. It's all about taming our fear and learning to master certain set of skills to solve a particular problem/puzzle.

I know this answer will not please you, n00bw1b00b. Again since we are living in this free world, one has the right to decide what to do and what not to do in one's life. If you don't like certain, just walk away from it since there is no other human being pointing a gun at one's head and makes him to do certain thing.

Climb safe (on whatever medium you prefer to climb on.)

Climbing frozen water is awesome! And besides, only ice climber knows what it actually means to "push the bush."

This is also true of climbing gyms
