In thick ice winters past, we have put in full size screws while on tope rope, just for practice. I just don't trust the attachment of the ice to the silo to fall on a lead screw itself....sometimes we have pretty looking ice, but very poor attachment on upper 20 ft. Scary stuff for sure,,we knock off alot each climb, making good use of our helmets.

Man made ice is like that. Aerated. Ye I would not lead the silo either. You should check out some areas for ice farming. It gets pretty cold in your neck of the woods. It looks like you have plenty of time to do some scouting. I remember a place in PA called "the narrows " apparently they were created by somebody tapping the water drainage pipes. Another option would be to pump some water up . The narrows was not even all solid rock. It was partially frozen dirt and rock. With the lowering temp and deliberate actions you may be able to farm some good ice there. Drip it slow so it solidifies better and wait till it gets to at least 6 inches thick to climb it. Don't hack it right away. Keep us posted on your ice adventures. We are in the desert for the winter.

we've adjusted our sprinkler , soaker, and drip systems over the years to get the most coverage from just a garden hose set up on our silo. Have had ice up to 4 ft thick at times, but most of our climbig is done on 18 inch to 2 ft thick stuff,,with the top being much thinner, often under a foot thick. Comes in different each time, due to wind and where the water changes flow over the first layers and lumps of ice laid down. Hope to be up and going within a cold week once again. Had 5 freeze ups, melt outs last winter and each one was great climbing with maybe a week or so downtime in between.

Dangle some tags or ropes along the ice flow on silo. It may make it bond better. Maybe sheets and rags would make for a better contact and growth. Just some ideas.
