The only other "thing" I've had to try and get out of the way to the base of a route in Cody is the Sheep.......

A big ass Ram giving you that sideways look.......

HMMM is he gonna charge me ?????

Guess maybe I'll walk a little this way for a bit and see where he goes.....

As my good buddy and long time ice climbing partner Bryon said years ago

"there is no good ice climbing on the front range"

Compared to Cody the front range is well except for the occasional mega classic's that form up not worth the effort.

Wake up butt early, get to a trail head, know there will be other people about.

Last year I took a friend from work out for his first time, thought I'd take him up to Jewel Lake in RMNP......

Nice little hike, nice little chunk of ice for his first time out.

We get beat to the base, and we were out early, by two nice older gentlemen.

Were both getting our gear together, I'm racking up a couple of screws and TR anchor stuff.......

Out of the corner of my eye I'm wondering, "what is this guy doing putting a rope on his back"

Then it hit me, oh yea this is the Front Range where any gumby can call himself an ice climber by walking around a slab of easy angled ice and setting up a TR.

Then proceed to bash the shit out of the ice with repeated yells of "ice".

These two "Tools" on their mighty slog up and around the climb for one or another reason drops one of his brand new tools in the early season light snow at the top of the route.

When we left he was still looking for it......

Front Range Ice, I almost always just wait and drive to Cody for no lines and miles of blue ecstasy......

Just us and the sheep.........

With the crowds and the attitude of so many Front Range climbers I just don't bother much anymore around these parts...

I know most are saying great one less person out there, but have you looked at Hidden Falls mid season ???

It looks like it was placed on a firing range for .50 cal practice.....

It's not even ice climbing all the holes, and hooks.......

UGHHHH......

Trask?!?.. hahaha, nice. What's up dude? I don't get this dispute; to the winner go the spoils.

Besides, it's pretty much ice climbing season in Canada, so we should really just drop it.

Wow, tough crowd. I think it's a little weird to park next to somebody, then sprint out of the gate to try to beat them to a climb. Did you guys talk in the parking lot at all?

So, honestly, I don't think Dan is entirely in the right.

Yeah, I've sprinted past people and been snaked at the last minute. It never makes me feel all that good, in either situation.

agreed. You obviously knew what they were there to climb. So racking up in your car and running ahead of them on the trail is a little lame in my opinion. As johnny said I wouldnt feel good on either side of that situation.

Easy there sport. How can anyone be worse than me?

matt davies wrote: 2- It's almost always a bad idea to leave threatening notes on cars, unless you're threatening Tits to get his ass in gear and get an early start for once.
Nobody wakes up earlier than me! They also don't walk nearly as slow either!

Honestly, I am surprised that Kevin C. wrote the note. He has always been an upstanding citizen in the ice climbing community and a great contributor to Mountain Project. Apparently, even great guys have bad days. I am glad to read that it has been resolved and no hard feelings remain.

Actually, I think I've been spoiled by climbing up there so much and don't know how to deal with crowds anymore. Even Canada is crowded by Cody standards. Uh, I mean, Cody's a terrible place to climb, horrible approaches, crowds, man-eating grizzlies, not much ice and what there is is always in poor shape. ;^)

As I've said before, the ice park is a blessing and a curse. Now anyone can be an "ice climber.". OTOH Everyone's gotta learn somewhere/somehow.

I know, just gotta bust some chops. I think I might have you beat for best slow walker, though.

So this happened to me last year on Pikes... First in line. Guy pulls up behind. Runs out of his car to ranger kiosk. Tells ranger he's guiding ( he's not) and that we were with him (complete lie). Somehow he talked ranger into opening the "out" gate. He flys in the out gate. Ranger then opens public gate. I ask "what's that about?" Ranger replies " oh he's a local guide, you're not with him".

Anyway, the "guide" was no match for my diesel. We beat him anyway

Is that acceptable behavior??? I thought it was pretty shady!!

I sure don't have time to read all this crap....but this no doubt is part of the ongoing pussification and dumbing down of this sport.

Stephen,

Pump them breaks! I was in that other car. Might wanna get your facts strait before put people on internet blast!

1) That guide is up there all the time and knows the "ranger" well. you've never gotten a deal/break or anything from someone you know?!
2) NO match for your diesel?! Its a nice truck but We were racking up when you and KC pulled up. I felt bad about the skunk move at the gate so I walked over to you and asked what you guys were getting on. Then gave you dibs on the route. The Guide and i got on BA then TA after you guys.

You seemed like a nice guy, don't be an internet gagster. Thats just shady!!

one time i was about 20 feet from the base of a super gnar tower getting ready to send. then some douche showed up, ran between me and the tower, threw his rope down, and looked at me as if to say "dibs". needless to say we let him have it. If you're in that much of a hurry I dont want to be in front of you. Then we went to the parking lot and took a shit in his trunk.

Jay,
I'm sorry you felt that was an Internet blast. Just sharing an experience I had. I since know you names and laugh about it. I didn't really call you out, thought I kept it pretty anonymous? The ranger was the one that told me first hand what was said in your "top secret" kiosk meeting, to me those are facts. Obviously you have a different rendition.

Of course I have gotten deals/ breaks from friends but I am proud to say NEVER at the expense of another person. Please remember that you only conceded after we walked out of my truck geared up and the driver stated "Shit, you guys are already geared up?!?" My response " we figured some one would try to snake the route". Then you conceded to BA.

Finally
I am a very nice guy and I'm sorry you personalized my post. Your statement about Mountain Karma is pretty harsh, I feel confident in the fact that have enough good juju to overcome one persons perceived negative interaction.

Have fun out there!! Climb hard, climb safe!!

I suppose we should all just let this one be.........some of us know that there are those that just want to share a bad story and throw gas on the fire and others just want to complain. I say lets all just try and treat each other a little better and maybe climbing can still leave you with a kick ass feeling

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
