Hey all,

I'm looking for suggestions. I want a pack that has the following features:

1) Ski carry
2) Snowboard Carry
3) Ice Axe Loops
4) Prefer it to have ski features as well (shovel pocket, beacon pocket, dry compartment, etc.)
5) Spacious pack for general climbing (Think Muira 50)

Anyone have any thoughts?

You literally just described the Dakine Pro 2. I bought it for back country snowboarding exploits a year ago and now it's my go to day pack for boarding and climbing. I love it. Favorite bag of all time.

Need something bigger and more well suited to alpine climbing.

Cold Cold World

1) Ski carry - Check
2) Snowboard Carry - Randy Rackliff can customize your pack. He added straps for a snowboard to mine, at no additional cost. That said, I have yet to use it, as I'm always on my skis these days . . .

3) Ice Axe Loops - Check
4) Prefer it to have ski features as well (shovel pocket, beacon pocket, dry compartment, etc.) Mine doesn't have dedicated pockets for these, but it's not hard to fit them in. That said, if you have something in mind, call Randy, and he will hook you up.
5) Spacious pack for general climbing (Think Muira 50) They make various sizes, the smallest is the Valdez at 40L and the largest is the Chaos at 70L. The Chernobyl comes in at 50L and might be what you're looking for.

I use the Chaos for trips that take multiple days, and the Valdez as a day pack for ski-mountaineering and climbing.

Me with shovel and skis on a CCW Chaos:

CiloGear, with some of their accessories, would work well too I think.

Randy at Cold Cold World is great. He worked with me, tweaking his designs a little for my preference and got the torso size perfect.

No snowboard carry.

Anyone got any experience with backcountry.com/mammut-trio… or any of the trion series? I just can't tell if they can hold a snowboard. The light 28 says it can, though I don't see anywhere for it to go. Also, the larger models are nicer, but there is no word on whether or not they can take a snowboard.

Also, backcountry.com/mammut-spin… looks interesting as well.

The two compression straps can be moved to the outside of the pack which would probably accomodate a snowboard perfectly. I'll check when I get home and try to get a picture up. (the directissima 46) Just noticed it's back to full price on MJ though $250

I have a TNF Patrol 34 that I like. It's on the smaller side but has board and ski carry options, crampon pocket, dedicated avy tool pockets, etc... The pack itself is on the heavy side but it fits me really well and feels light even with a burly load.

The compression straps can either go under the crampon patch or wrap on the outside of the bag- this makes for a perfect snowboard carry. Solid pack for your requirements, IMHO.

Good luck,

I've got a patrol 50 or thereabouts that is great for winter.

Not sure how many 50L packs also have dedicated snowboard straps. Seems like most snowboard packs are generally on the small side. I'm very happy with my Osprey Variant 37 as a ski-mountaineering/ice-climbing/alpine climbing pack, and it holds as much as some other 50L packs that I've owned. If you're handy with a Speedy Stitcher you could easily rig up a snowboard carrying system.

Oops missed that part.
