On profiles that say "Lead 3rd/Follow 4th" WTH does that mean? Is that some funky Euro grade or is it 3rd/4th Class as per the American definitions to which I am accustomed?

So how many people went to their profile to see if they could actually change it to 3rd or 4th after reading this?

I'm pretty sure those are the default values...

No offense, your title is redundant.

I just want to take this opportunity to reiterate my support for the term "third-classing",over "free soloing".It's way cooler, and brings a technical jargon into the mix that requires a deeper understanding of the concept than you can get from 60 Minutes.

That would be III, 5.7 or IV, 5.7.

By the way; it has little to do with approach time or remoteness. The length of the route is the determining factor there.

Ummm... it means 3rd class aka hiking, and 4th class aka scrambling... British shit I think... 1st class is a flat trail, 2nd has some hills, etc... that's what 5 in 5.X means, 5th class... vertical climbing...

Wow. I didn't think this would elicit so many responses. I understand all of the various ways climbs are rated. My question was merely reflecting upon why profiles have 3rd and 4th as options. I assumed it meant Class 3 and 4, but it seemed weird they were even options on MP. I'd figure everyone on this site climbs 5.0 and above.

They do climb over 5.0. I think it's more of a statement of not caring about pointing out how hard they do or don't climb. When you aren't looking for a partner it doesn't matter, you can make a facetious statment about your climbing ability.

It's not to be taken literally. But hey...I'm sure there are some noobs that could probably say 4th and be honest, at least until they get the experience.

My profile used to say I followed 3rd class sport... because who really cares what I can TR on a sport route?

Believe it or not there are some people who need to rope up on 3rd and 4th class (seen it at the approach to split rocks in Jtree). Maybe they are being honest.

Also it is hard for me to believe but some people do only 3rd and 4th class--they like to hike. I only hike to get to the rock to climb. For example I'm sure you will hear of the backpackers getting back to the car and mentioning they could do another 10 miles (of putting one foot in front of the other) while you are drinking a beer and licking your wounds while admiring how Tahquitz looks pink/purple as the sun goes down.

Each to thier own as long as they have fun!

Wouldn't these people be on the mountainprojecthiking.com website then?
