My girlfriend and I are taking a road trip for 8 days from South Lake Tahoe to Smith Rock Oregon. As I said earlier we have 8 days for this trip. We were wondering if anyone would recommend any good spots that we should stop and climb at in Northern California or Southern Oregon. Like Sonoma, Helena,SF, Castle. Oh yeah we mainly Sport and Boulder. Thanks for your time. Safe Climbing- Mark
On your way up to Smith, if you want to take a 30-45min detour off of 5 there is a limestone crag "near" Redding called The Shredding . Small but for one day of climbing it's great. Everything from moderates to a think one or 2 5.12's. Even 2 two pitch sport climbs. Although with the fires up and around Redding it will probably be pretty smoky still.
There is also Castle Crags, but that is all trad and some aid I think. I know there is some more spot climbing around Shasta, and an updated guide for that area just came out in june. Here for info and some other stuff near shasta
I recently went up to Smith, and past Shasta until Smith there isn't that much. Not like down here in CA where we are swimming in climbing :P
summitpost.org has a nice section on the Desolation Wilderness Area at Lake Tahoe. As a bonus, Fallen Leaf Lake is a hidden treasure right at the trailhead. You can pick up a topo map at The Ranger Station nearby.
Just google "Desolation Wilderness Bouldering". -Peter
You need to check out the Callahans in southern OR. It's big enough that you could easily spend a week there. 99% bolted with a trad line here and there.
Also in S OR is Rattlesnake Rock as well as a nice chunk of stone called Acker Rock.
Check out the Orton guide for the southern Willamette Valley/Rogue.
