I have been to the bugaboos before and have a chance to go back. Its been a few years and it seemed easy to cross the border when I was with my girlfriend! I am had a DUI reduced to a DWAI last Nov and was hoping it would not hinder my ability to get back there soon. Thanks for any input, climb on!

Good luck..
my old man was denied access on a FERRY BOAT to vancouver island because of a 25 year old DUI. He wasn't even driving. They made him stay on the boat with the captain. I would enquire with canadian customs to what their official policy is regarding this. It would suck to get to the border ready to send and get shut down.

Dude do you know what beer costs in British Columbia? Forget THAT place.

j/k, and GL getting back to the Bugs. I'd enquire with someone official before wasting time on trip planning based on what anyone here says.

Definitely check first. I know people who have been turned back at the border for DUI.

First off, the Canadian Gov doesn't f'around with DUI's, hell, they almost treat it as being guilty of murder. A DWAI i'm not sure about, but you will no doubt have to jump through some serious hurdles to plead your case and gain entry. In the end, they have no obligation to let you into the country, an infraction of any kind makes their decision that much easier. Even a DWAI is viewed as very bad form.

I live in Victoria, BC and am currently trying to find a way for my dad, who was charged with a DUI, to visit me. Not an easy process.

Good luck with this.

I've heard about alot of border turnarounds, since it's a felony up there. I did see one guy getting to pay his way in at the VT border one time, and I think it cost him like $500. Now I'm not sure about the legality of that, but it got him in.

I'd make a backup plan nearby in the US in case it doesn't work out.

There's no difference between DUI and DWAI, as far as the Canadian Border is concerned. Trust me, I know, eh?

If there was no damage nor injury due to your incident, they MAY grant a waiver but probably not. You'd have to have your court paperwork faxed there for them to probably still not let you in.

If it's been over 10 years, then you have a much better chance but must still obtain a waiver ahead of time.

You're a sinner, brah.

They will do the exclusion waiver on the spot (taking your money, of course). In my case, about five years ago, the nick was $200. Then you can expect a letter documenting your payment and providing a record you can take with you on your next visit.
Try not to give 'em too much lip about how they finance their country... we're not any better, really, when it comes to raising $$$. And have a great trip.
Our biggest mistake was telling them we were coming to Canada to climb.., mention golf instead.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
