Climbing Trip mid Oct. Gunks or Jtree wich is better?

Manny Rangel · · PAYSON · Joined Jan 2006 · Points: 4,789

Depends on what you want. JT has real cracks and the Gunks cracks are mainly horizontal making you feel like face climbing with pro.

I like the Gunks and may be there in October too. Fine weather and only my third trip there so I still have a lot to look forward to. But, I have been challenged more on the easier grades in Gunks and can do just fine on the same grades in JT. Puzzling, I know, but I think the ratings in the Gunks may be a bit hard. Maybe it's my lead head.

Both are great and very enjoyable in their own way, just different.

listen hear boys the gunks has a bike path at the base of the cliff. No kidding a freaking bike path. Also it's not far from the land of suits and ties (wall street) at least the yuppies here are cool(not really but better than wall street). Real men go to Jtree...or are you guys going to share your tent or vehicle when you sleep? If you are then by all means the gunks is the place for you!

In this corner weighing in at 800lbs the undisputed heavyweight champion of the grade 1 climbing areas Undefeated in all previous fights with a record of Infinity to Zero all by knockout: Joshua Tree

And in this corner weighing at a puny 800 grams the poser challenger from the state better known for robber barons and banksters is The Gunks.

Announcers: Howard Cosell "I think the gunks is in for a vicious beating...this is the first time the gunks has fought an opponent of Joshua Tree's caliber, Joshua Tree has no weaknesses it has better everything than the gunks. the only hope the gunks has is if Joshua Tree stayed up all night partying and woke up drunk frankly even then the gunks is in serious trouble.

The bell rings to start the first round. Howard Cosell "Down goes the gunks, Down goes the gunks, down goes the gunks. first punch knockout.

Howard interviewing the gunks after the fight: "what happened Gunks? gunks replies "I dont know what hit me, I wasnt prepared for the power of Joshua Tree I mean I didnt know what to prepare for Hard Cracks its better, bouldering its better, easy cracks its better, partying its better, night adventures its better, camping its better I mean what can I do, I had no chance.

Howard interviewing Joshua Tree after the fight: "what do you have to say Joshua Tree "next" "I'll go anywhere and matchup with anyplace and I will knock them out!"

JTree seems to be a little short on multi compared to the Gunks.

There is enough there to keep you busy for a good week, maybe more. Horsehead, wild horse, Horse something I can not think of what it is called, has a lot of multipitch stuff. Couple other places where it is high density. And the views are faboulos!!!! Amuzing!!! Wanderful!! Go to the The Tree. Free solo some short cracks, fall in love, come back every Oct. for two years, give up and move to southern CA so you can go once a week.

Sorry to throw you under the bus Colonel Mustard & ZachR what you meant to say is "the gunks has more 2-3 pitch climbs close to each other". I bet if we go route for route there is actually more multipitch in Jtree in fact I'd be willing to bet on it. All we need to do is find out the total # of multipitch routes as well as the # of stars for the routes and then square off. 2 and 3 pitch climbs Jtree has plenty but they are spread out. Who wants to begin compiling the list?

According to a MP search of 5.3 to 5.13 routes of at least 2 pitches the Gunks has 197 and JTree 144. I know that MP is hardly an authoritative source because I know the Gunks has a lot more than that. I'd be willing to take that bet.

I think the phrasing was key...2-3 multipitch climbs that are close together. I have been to both and both have so many multipitch climbs that the total number is irrelevant. However, you can't tell me that the climbs at Jtree are as close together as the climbs at the gunks. It is a lot easier to get more pitches in one day at the gunks. Also easier if you have a group of varied levels that want to climb near one another.

I think where you go should depend on the experience you want since both places are world class destinations. If you want to camp out and cook your own food and have a more true camping experience go to jtree. If you want to eat out, and go to bars, go to the gunks.

Put a post out there about how my dad can kick your dad's ass and watch the fun begin. Yep I felt the satisfaction build as a giant smile spread across my face from all the havoc that ensued. I mean some dude got on the internet and posted photos of the gunks that weren't even his. You guessed it I've actually been to both places and it is only my 2 cents but Jtree hands down mostly for the reasons Eric listed. For one the dude is funny as hell in person (not so much through your posts though Eric). Since he is gone we wont have him to lead countless trips(hundreds last time I saw him) through the chasm without the headlamp the campground will miss that.

when were you last at JT that pic is very recent. Also I think I recognize both of the guys in the non action pic that looks like father/son possibly to me. We always say that the climbers have less impact than the guys who put in the road...had to put breaks in the curb every so often so the desert tortoise could escape if it wandered onto the road...road put in somewhere around 2000 if I remember correct. So here is a pick for your viewing pleasure I would gladly perform this for losing a bet at the gunks on your bike path

I've only been to Jtree once but it was on a 9 day trip. While the landscape is beautiful and other worldly I didn't much care for the rock itself. Of all the climbing trips that I have been on throughout the country and the world the stone in Jtree was my least favorite of any major area that I have been to. Also while the camping scene there is great, I found that the surrounding towns offered very little especially for quality food and restaurants. I see so many people rave about Jtree climbing and clearly it is a matter of personal preference, but there are so many places that I will visit and revisit before even thinking about returning to Jtree. I've been to red rocks numerous times and will definitely be back there before Jtree.

I love the gunks, but my opinion is extremely biased there as it is my home crag. The climbing is fantastic. There is also allot more to it than just the trapps and the nears. There is a plethora of good restaurants and places to get food, many nearby quaint towns, great swimming, plenty of water, fall foliage. Also if there midweek crowds are not an issue and even on weekends there are so many climbs there is never a reason to wait for any climb.
