Funny how people think that anything west of Worcester is "the berkshires."

I think Farley is in the Midwest.

I am not sure but I would say this may be the tallest cliff in Kentucky

Any Canucks wanna add some provinces? I'm guessing BC you could say the Chief (ca. 1000ft? I suppose one should start using meters in Canada...), and then something in the Bugs for Alberta, but what about Saskatchewan and the rest?

Tristan Higbee wrote:I want to compile a list of the tallest cliff in each state. As people give their input, I'll update this post. I'm talking cliff--meaning all rock, not ice/snow faces on Rainier or Denali or anything. Arizona -- Vermillion Cliffs (~1,500'?) California -- El Capitan (~3,000') Colorado -- Painted Wall, Black Canyon (~2,000') Georgia -- Stone Mountain (825') (Closed to climbing) Idaho -- Slick Rock or Elephant's Perch ? Maine -- Taber Wall, Mt. Katahdin (1000+ feet.) Maryland -- the Narrows at 180-200 feet, or some sections of Maryland Heights above Harpers ferry around the same height Massachusetts -- Crow Hill? (There are bigger cliffs in the Berkshires, though. Maybe around 120'.) Michigan -- Trap Hills area, Porcupine Mountains. (?') Minnesota -- Palisade Head (~200 feet) Montana -- Mt. Siyeh north face (~3,500'?) Nevada -- East Face of Mt. Wilson (~2,500'). (Black Velvet wall is more sheer and ~2,200'. N. Face of Wheeler Peak is big, but how big?) New Hampshire -- Cannon Cliff (1,000' ?) New Mexico -- Brazos Cliffs (~2,000' ? with debatable vertical. Anyone got a better "cliff"? New York -- Wallface Mountain (900+ feet) (tallest sustained class 5 climb is East Fast of Gothics at 1200' 5.7 slab) North Carolina -- Laurel Knob (1,200') Oregon -- Wolf Rock?? ~1000 ft.? (Might be taller granite in Eagle Cap...?) South Carolina -- Table Rock (750') Texas -- Boquillas Canyon in Big Bend (~300+) (or maybe El Capitan or Guadalupe Peak in the Guadalupe Mountains?) (backside of Enchanted Rock in Texas is 425 feet (3 pitches) but it is somewhat sloppy to be called a cliff) Utah -- Notch Peak north face (~2,000+ feet) Vermont -- Willoughby? Washington -- East face of Liberty Bell or something up at Darrington ?? North face of McMillian Spires in the Pickets?? The Norwegian Buttress(s) on Index? West Virginia -- Champ Rock (450')? Wyoming -- North Face of Grand Teton ? (north face of Mt. Hooker is steeper but not as big)
Hawaii has some of the largest cliffs in the USA, some are in excess of 3,000'. Too bad the tallest climbable one is only 140'.

Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania is maybe 220 feet. I've never been but here's the link:

The route Reflections on the back (west) side checks in at 6 or 8 pitches as I recall. Most people are only familiar with the view from the State Park side. Table Rock is surprisingly large for a state like South Carolina.

For NC, what about Whitesides? Isn't that taller than Laurel Knob? I've seen that listed as 1800'

Biggest in CT is likely the BD Wall at West Rock. Guidebook puts it at 300 feet of choss, which is probably an exaggeration, but it is bigger than Sleeping Giant.

Tim Davis wrote:Alabama: I would think the tallest in Alabama is the cliff that is on Nature Conservancy land on the side of Chandler Mountain. It is located between HP 40 and Steele and looks bigger than anything else I have seen in Alabama. It can be seen from Beason Cove Rd. Does anybody know anything about it? I assume it is closed to climbing.
That is a tall one but Painted Blufff is likely the tallest.

Table Rock, SC's North Side is easily 750' of vertical granite.

Laurel Knob is the tallest cliff in NC with the middle section being every bit of 1,500'....maybe more. Deceiving due to the convex nature of the dome.

Based on the caver's rappel at Whitesides' SE Face, I would say that the middle section is under 1,000' tall but the climbing is longer considering the concave nature of the face. WS SE Face is definately not as tall as LK.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
