Biggest cliff in each state

Tim Worth has done a lot of work with the NED files (National Elevation Dataset). ned-files.com/all.html to come up with a "steepness list" Western US only.

I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for as its created strictly from Topo information, he explains in detail how he arrived at the numbers. No climbing quality involved, or canyons.

Alabama: I would think the tallest in Alabama is the cliff that is on Nature Conservancy land on the side of Chandler Mountain. It is located between HP 40 and Steele and looks bigger than anything else I have seen in Alabama. It can be seen from Beason Cove Rd. Does anybody know anything about it? I assume it is closed to climbing.

yeah that's slab daddy, put up by whitelaw and crew.

theres also infinite bliss on the W peak of mt. garfield, at 23 pitches. both those cliffs are slabs though, not high angle. the diamond on bear peak is very steep, maybe 1500 feet high? perhaps the N face of dragontail? that's ~2500 feet of vertical and it looks pretty damn sheer when your standing below it...

nf of dragontail is big, but it is nowhere near shear. i think for shear cliffs its gotta be something like EF liberty bell, EF Lemolo, or Diamond on Bear.

I'm glad to see if finally stated, quantified, that California is 50% better than Colorado.

Surely the PA side of the Delaware Water Gap is taller than those.

Resurrection!

So here's a good question: Who has done the most of the tallest cliffs? Maybe there should be some kind of award...

I've climbed all the tall cliffs. I win, wtf is my award?

Mt Minsi is 200' and Tammany in NJ is 280'. Both are the tallest natural cliffs in each state but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a taller quarry wall somewhere in PA.

Back to AZ, and similar to the climbability of the Vermillion Cliffs, the east side of Marble Canyon in the Grand Canyon is 3000'. As for actual routes, the east face of Baboquivari is right about 1000'.

For Oregon, n. face of the Matterhorn might be taller than Wolf?

here

In WV, it is Champe Rocks, not Champ. There's a route on the 450' arete of one of the south fins called Almost Heaven which is the tallest individual route in the state, although you can link some routes together at Seneca from the South End to the South Peak as per Seneca Trail which would be taller.

If you count any of these then the correct answer is the N Face of Davis peak. Its the biggest face in the N cascades and probably the tallest in the lower 48. Also I think you should have a look at the N side of Luna peak.

Where's Big Bluff?

My parents live in Gilbert (near Harrison) so I'm always up for learning about different areas up there.

It's a few miles hike from steel creek on the buffalo. Never actually climbed although I've heard it's scary limestone climbing. Rockclimbing.com has more complete info on AR climbing. Red Rock point is likely the best large formation.

Yeah, from what I've seen most everything on the buffalo is super soft.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
