Trundling

I can confirm. I too have not actually trundled on anybody. The most I have done is have a hold come off on TR still clasped in my hand, and chucked it far from the cliff and anybody.

But yeah, people at Crag o' Dynamite need to be aware that rockfall is a part of climbing at this specific crag. Even though I don't condone the unnecessary trundling or cleaning of routes, every time I've been to Crag o' Dynamite it has needed a good responsible shakedown.

Make sure your car is parked uphill and around the corner. As for your partners, that's optional.

Only you can make that judgement based on the size of the blocks, the distance they are going to fall and the terrain below. Sometimes the blocks will land on the ground with a thud and stay right there and sometimes they shatter into a million pieces that fly off in all directions.

The general answer is the further the better and you should be in radio contact with someone below to make absolutely sure that the coast is clear.

A few months back we were hanging out at a local crag talking with some out of towners when a wallet-sized rock landed about 20 feet away from us. We immediately knew some twat chucked it off the top and so we all just stared at the top of the rock for a minute or so waiting for the culprit to peek over. Sure enough, two heads pop out to assess the spoils of their stupidity. It turned out to be be two girls around the age of 12 or so 'having fun' with gravity.

We assured them via elevated dialogue that the antics were in no way amusing and informed them that we would contact the Forest Service if they didn't leave the area immediately. Queue pitter pattering of little feet down the approach trail. As stated previously, common sense is not at all that common.

My friends and I play trundle bowling at our CT crags - notorious for loose traprock - it's awesome. Usually, the person that gets hit the most owes everyone in the group a beer at the end of the day. The key is you can't move from the base of the climb until the rocks' first hit on the wall or ground. If you move too early (like flinching) you owe the trundling climber a beer. . .

Agreed... good troll but somewhat tactless.

Hey I accomplished a great troll thread! Not only did I troll but if someone dumb enough to actually trundle rocks on people comes along and reads this I think they will get the point that it is stupid. And yes I have know people hurt by falling rocks as well (David Lee).

For your next act, maybe you should make jokes about people dying from rapping off the ends of their ropes or tying in wrong. And dying. That is so fun and funny isn't it! It is just "hilarious"! Have any jokes about Craig Lubben? You will feel so cool about yourself after you make light of his death.

Ok for one calm down hotshot. For two I just re read the whole thing, nowhere did I mention anything about dying. I made a crack about needing a first aid kit. Maybe slightly out of line but not to make the jump to death. Not only that but really the original question is something that everyone should ask themselves before knocking rocks off.
Yes it was a troll to get people like you to get all hot headed and angry. But in no way did I make a jump to jokes about people dying. Now take a couple deep breaths before you respond.

Why do you feel the need to abuse the forums like this then? It is users like you and other trolls that continue to degrade a public forum with moronic questions and drivel.

I can take a joke as well as anyone, but this subject is not a joking matter for some of us.

Someone please make a killfile like RC.com so we can ignore these useless wastes of space.

You and Elanor are irritatingly similar. Go away please.

Oh, sweet profile pic too brah. Glad you don't hold my rope. Tie a f-ing knot ya fool! I guess at least you have a first aid kit.

Nobody was joking about how dangerous it is to trundle rocks without knowing what is below you. That is pretty serious. I was actually using a real life example. True story a rock did get trundled/thrown off onto a party by idiots above. All I was doing was making fun of people like you that get quite angry over threads.

The real story: About a year ago some friends of mine were out climbing. It was a busy crag and this troop of inexperienced people showed up. They were screaming back and forth between the top of the climb and the base trying to figure out where to drop a rope. One lady yells "Hey I will throw a rock off so you can see where we are!" Horror from everyone below. Later they actually did knock a rock off, not sure if it was on purpose, and I believe that a climber was hit and was rather mad (no kidding) but another party had a first aid kit that he was willing to let the injured party use. Everyone was fine minus a headache and a small cut.

So in terms of a "how could you be that stupid" thought. I posted it. Apparantly either most people are really untrustful of the inteligence of the average climber, or there are a lot of stupid climbers out there that throw rocks and everyone has had a run in with them. I have yet to meet anyone that thought trundling rocks with climbers anywhere nearby was a good idea. There you have it.

For those of you who feel that this is a waste of time. Go back and read this thread. I see tons of great info on how to clean routes and how to do it safely. Despite my "trolling" there is some serious good advice in there, the forums are more powerful than you think young panda-one!

You ever think before you type? The leader had built a anchor and called belay off. I then got my pack and took out the camera and took a picture. I think of it as why you should always buy a 70m rope. In that same trip that same guy missed/didn't like the anchor on Sticher Quits. So he kept going to build his own anchor. As it turned out it was a good thing I had a knot in my rope because I ran out and had to simul up to the first bolt in order for him to get anchored. Super sketchy leader, cool cat though. Good times.

Right. So, you were "making fun" of users like me who get upset over a semi-serious post about trundling rocks, by asking a stupid question "for fun"?

Explain how this is not joking about the dangers of trundling. Without using the word troll.

Holy cow! K so there are several people on that thread that said they enjoy trundling rocks "for the fun of it". Don't worry guys I just said I like posting useless forum threads about trundling rocks on routes. And yet I am catching way more heat for this than they did. Think about it a little bit.

Ahh I love the interwebs.

J Hazard wrote:It was at a obscure little crag called Crag o' Dynamite. A rather large chunk of rock was sitting just waiting to be pulled off, so I pulled it. The other people were to the left of the route, figured it would be safe. Yeah they got kind of mad. Everyone was ok though, no worries.
the reason you they got mad is because you assumed a lot in your actions. You assumed everybody else would perceive the risk the same as you, that you would feel OK if you were them, which you arent. All that stuff. Next time take some time and communicate to the other climbers in the area. Or leave the block alone.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
