Wow, that dude got super lucky! Seems pretty stupid to be soloing on melting ice like that. I'm glad someone got that on video!

not soloing, leading. You can see the rope.

This vid screams "shit show". Also, just because you have a rope on doesn't mean you're not "soloing".

Actually...it does. You are tied to at least one other person and your lives are inextricably linked through that rope. The decisions you make affect not only you but your partner lashed to whatever shitty belay you happened to scrape together in conditions this climber found himself in.

If the belay manages to hold the factor 2 whipper you subjected it to your partner will find themselves attached to their dead friend on the other end of the rope with no way down without leaving them in situ. Doesn't exactly leave the "soloist's" belayer in a good position.

Unless...said "soloist" decks before pulling on the belay. That's the situation here per comments I read from people who where present at this escapade.

We all make bad decisions, luckily, mine have all been with women. Ice is way more loving and forgiving, this dude lucked out, had that been a wife instead of an ice smear, no belay in the world could have saved him.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
