We were planning on climbing at Devils Head, Friday to Sunday this week. Anyone down in that area right now that can give us an update on conditions/how close the fire is?

Thanks

we were also planning on heading to Devil's Head this weekend but under the circumstances we are bailing.

here is a map of the fire's general area that receives frequent updates.

yes devil's head is a ways up from the current location but with preevacuation already near palmer lake, and given what happened yesterday, the risk seems real.

Heard that the fire doubled size and that dozens of houses in Colorado Springs have been destroyed... only 5% contained.

I was looking to go climbing in Red Rock Canyon on Saturday but don't know if it is still open. Maps show that the fire is farther North, but can I still get there or get a permit to climb? Maybe a phone number I could call?

Red rocks is definitely closed. The highway to access it is closed as well. I live down the road from Cheyenne Canyon and I heard it was closed because of a short lived fire but not sure about that now. I'm out of town but my girlfriend just left our house because they're evacuating about 3 miles from our house. This sucks on many different levels. I'd go somewhere else for sure. I guide in those parks and up in Boulder. This is a huge nightmare in so many different ways.

Come on rain, minus the wind and lightning.. I'm in Littleton and the wind is howling. I feel pretty confident in saying, even from my remote location that the fires are going to get worse.

My wife and I evacuated at 11:30 last night. We drove down to my parent's place. We watched as the fire jumped several ridges to the north and headed down the slope into the neighborhoods. It was the most amazing and terrifying thing I've ever seen. So far, our area has been spared. It's hard to feel so helpless, but I'm changing summer climbing plans to help out in any way we can once the fire is settled down.

For climbers, I wouldn't recommend climbing anywhere near the Springs right now. The conditions are just too volatile. Officials extended the evacuation to include a significant portion of Rampart Range and pretty much all the local areas are closed.

Thanks guys, the map I saw looked like it was far enough away but I figured the locals would be on top of things. Looks like my weekend has just changed drastically.

The southern end is closed. The northen portion is still open, access from Hwy 67 or Jackson Creek Rd.

True, sorry if what I said sounded apathetic. I am truly concerned.

Doing my nightly ride around Cheyenne Canon tonight(road all parks are closed), only to find three seperate groups of teens smoking in picnic areas outside the Canon border. I stoped to inform them gently that they can't be smoking outside because of the Stage 2 fire ban, and because of all of the fires. They had no idea, and promply put out the smokes and understand the situation. Get the word out if you see this going on, and don't be a douche about it.
