Michigan climbing

"Detroit has become a modern day terror town, nearly unsafe for occupancy. It is near the anarchy that prevailed in the fictional file Escape From New York. |

The photo on the bottom is from the 60's. come on. |

hehe...i know...it's kinda funny though. |

Every state has their burned out buildings and crime problems. No lines for the climbs here and nobody attacks another climber with an ice axe either! |

Fortunately our opinion of California isn't wholly defined by L.A. ;) |

Michigan is really getting bashed in this thread... Sure, the economy is depressed and there isn't much besides Grand Ledge in terms of climbing in the lower peninsula, but there are lots of great things up there and I certainly don't judge it all based on Detroit (I actually grew up in Flint, which some argue is worse than Detroit). |
|
Senda, the bashing Detroit bandwagon is really tired at this point. If you read my OP, I said that I grew up in the burbs and then moved to the city proper as soon as I could. I spent 5 years in Detroit proper, and I loved every year. I never got robbed, never had anything stolen, never was assaulted, etc. |

I saw an episode of 60 Minutes (I think it was that show but not remembering that for sure) about all the great organic urban farming going on in Detroit old industrial sites and also a resurgence of community food markets as well. The common folk will persevere no matter what outside forces (and I have my own strong opinion about what those forces are) seek to destroy their livelyhood.... |

I'm sorry he asked about climbing in Michigan. If climbing in Michigan is a priority and you don't have the walking around money to drive to Canada or KY or buy a membership at a gym, Then it doesn't exist. The upper peninsula and lower peninsula might as well be different states. |
|
I believe I saw such a list... #1. Flint #2 Detroit.... I grew up in Manistee and it is/was awesome. |
|
Go to MI!!!! Just don't LIVE there! Till the Democrats leave.... ;) |

Where was that pic taken of, i'm assuming, you? It looks pretty awesome! Is that at painted rocks? also, is it sport climbing? it looks like it but I can't tell for sure. Thanks! Eric |

Thanks! EricHey Eric, The ice shot is HMR at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, climbed by two employees from our store. The rock shot is The Pinnacle 10a R either trad or top roped, located on the shores of Lake Superior in Marquette. The climber local hardman Kelly Laasko. Come on up and give them a try! |
