So I've been really interested in making the journey out to Bone. I've tried once but just ended up wandering around the woods near the sugar shack on the access road and decided to turn around due to the lack of beta. I know that there are fellow climbers on mountain project that know all about it so I was hoping to get some beta...

Anyone have a little more info on how to get there than the basic directions already posted on here?

Also if anyone knows and wants to go out there with me I'm totally down for that too so let me know!

Hi Jess,

I'd love to help, but the directions posted here are as good as any I could provide in written form. Everybody seems to get turned around the first time or two walking out there. It took my partner and I nearly 3 hours the first time we went back there. Good map, compass and route finding skills are pretty much essential until you get it dialed. The best approach by far is from the sugar shack, and is on logging roads for about 2/3s of the way, including all the elevation gain. There may still be some orange flagging along the way. If so, follow it. It eventually leads past the Satellite Crag to the base of Family Picnic. By the way, I live in Bristol as well. Small world.

Cheers,

Derek

Hey Jess,
Are you interested in bouldering up there or routes? A friend and I traveled up there a few times maybe 7 years ago....we skinned in once in the winter from the Bolton access road and otherwise hiked up from route 2 near Green Mountain road. I figured the best approach was from Bolton Quarry, past 82 Crag and up the logging roads from there...but it seems like Derek knows a bit more about it. We climbed around a bit but never found anything spectacular so continued developing other spots with "nicer" approaches haha, I'd be interested in checking it out now and seeing the lines Derek posted.

Thanks for the advice, I just downloaded the topo of the area which is probably the smartest idea I've had yet!

Also whats your schedule look like? Seeing as we live in the same town maybe we should do some climbing together, if youve got the time that is. And if you dont have time for climbing maybe coffee or something, as you seem to be quite the wealth of knowledge.

I'd really like to get on the two pitch climbs up there. I'm pretty sure I've the cliff ban from 89 (if you are traveling north on 89 its the highest cliff band on the right?) and it looks stunning. Something about it makes me want to climb to the top, kind of like all rocks, but those look really sweet. If you want to get after it something I am down. I have weekends off and try to get at least one day of climbing in if not both.

Hey Jess,

I'm around on and off all summer. I'll be over in Maine for the next 10 days or so, but when I'm in town, a crew climbs either out in Bolton or at Poko at least once a week, generally after work until dark, though sometimes we meet for dawn patrol sessions as well. You're welcome to come along some time if you'd like.

Cheers,

Derek
