I've read tale (on RC.com) that there is a small limestone sport crag on the island. I'm not looking for beta, just wondering if there is anyone out there that would want to meet up in early september and climb. Please let me know if you exist!

Hey Guy,

there is INDEED a small limey crag there...as you seem to already know.

I was there this past winter...Beautiful beach right next to the "cliff".

Unfortunately I wont be there in September, but just a few cautionary pieces of Info for you:

1) Be warned (if you haven't already) this area lies on Private/Archaeological land, and the owners in the little white cottage near by WILL call the officials if they're having a bad day. (just knock on their door and ask...they're usually pretty cool about that)

2) CHECK ALL BOLTS THOROUGHLY!--this limestone is REALLY soft..AND it just so happens to be sitting a hundred yards from a pretty salty ocean.
Last December I was at the top of route (40-45ft.), clipped in with a draw to ONE of the anchor bolts, had my partner "take me" on it...and...it SNAPPED!!--so did all four? of the other bolts as I plummeted to the ground.......scary shit!!
Luckily for my flacid body, someone had been doing some crag maintenance and had stacked up a bunch of palm fronds below the climb.

Anyway, you may already know all this...or don't care...

but just in case,
cheers

I've climbed at this "crag" and I can attest that its a total shitpile, not worth the effort. The rock is nasty, covered in thick spiderwebs, vegetation and dirt. The routes are about 25' tall and the humidity plus sharp rock will wreck your skin.

Your time is far better spent doing things you can't do on the mainland.

If this is indeed limestone, its not like any limestone I've ever seen. I thought it was sandstone. Albeit very sharp and sculpted.

That's pretty dam cool. I would have thought only igneous lava and basalt based rocks would have compose each and every island. Never thought sedimentary rocks could be formed and hardened up in only a few hundred thousand years. Good geologic link!

Well thank you folks! It looks as though I will NOT be climbing in Kauai. I figured the tale of this limestone crag was too good to be true.

On the beach near where the Na Pali coastline hike begins there are a couple of boulders that are kind of fun. Nothing to get excited about, but worth checking out if you are in the area, and need to scratch that itch. Overall, Kauai is an AMAZING destination, though, and you will have a blast even without rock climbing (although that seems close to impossible, I know).

Make sure you eat breakfast at the Tip Top Cafe in Lihue at least once, and order macadamia nut pancakes. My wife and I still talk about this little hole in the wall years later.

This - I thought I might need to look around for some rocks but there is so much OTHER adventure and beauty there I, for once, wasn't worried about climbing.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
