Is Piedra river a good crag for kids? Do you really rap in? How bad is the poison ivy?
Thanks

I didn't think the poison ivy was bad (by Black Canyon standards). Its easily avoided (can't promise what the kids will get into). Its a great, easy, hike into the canyon and is perfect for the family. If you are gonna have the kids climb....there are only a few easy climbs, but, if you have some gear you can rig up some easy topropes on some of the large boulders lining the river. And no, you definitely do not have to rap in.

I have two kids and just don't go there. Maybe the routes by the Ice Caves are better but kids just can't help but wander and PI is in a number of places. Not worth the risk. Go to Big Meadows instead. Its a great area for kids and adults to have fun climbing or just hanging out.

+1 for Piedra canyon & kids
I had a buddy blast up one of the better 12s last season, The kids loved watching (mom then did the 3rd ascent of a new 10)That area had most of the PI but the kids never got near it. The family spent the entire day playing in the river after that. They told me the next week that it was the best 2 day weekend they had been on in years.
(the kids were 3 & 5 y.o)
