I will be in RMNP in August and am planning on climbing Mt. Alice by way of the Central Ramp route. Any useful information on this route beyond that which is already posted in the description/guidebooks would be appreciated. Average route time and approach preference would be great to know from anyone who has climbed this. Thank you!!!

There's not a lot to say about the route - it doesn't have a really distinct line. It's great fun! Many variations are possible.

I'd bivy at the base of the route - beautiful place to spend the night. There's only one way to approach - Lion Lake. We started by traversing in from the right under the main face.

I like the Hourglass Ridge descent - that's the ridge leading right to Chiefshead. But the descent to the left down a big grassy slope is easier.

The last time I talked to the back country office I was told that no bivy permits are issued for the Mt. Alice area and it's illegal to bivy there.
Not sure if this is still the case but figured I'd give you a heads up.
If you do happen to check on the current bivy situation post up what you find out, I'd be curious to know and appreciate your effort.

You can bivy up there. I did last year in august. It's highly recommended as the area is beautiful. The route doesn't get climbed as much as other RMNP classics, but it is a fun jaunt. My partner and I ended up climbing some run out pitches that were off route, but quite excellent (.8ish?). Have fun up there, it is a special place.

You can bivy for that route.

Also the approach is long. 8 or so miles. Best bivy or get an earlier start than you would for climbing longs. Gorgeous area.

Thanks so much for all the input. I am definitely planning to bivy at the base and get an early start from there. Any thoughts on rapping back down the route?

Dammit, I was lied to. Thanks guys for the info, I guess you don't always get someone who knows what they're talking about.

Just come back down hourglass ridge. I dont think any rap stations exist. Could
be wrong.

Also worth noting that in RMNP you cannot get a bivy permit over the phone. You can reserve them via phone but they won't mail you the permit so you have to show up in person at the ranger station to pick them up. That means that you can't get the alpine start, if you are picking up the permit on your way into town. Recommend either enjoying a full day for the approach and deal with the permits before you go in, or do them one afternoon, camp by the trailhead and then start early on the hike.

Also note that the park changed the regs and you may have to carry a bear canister now depending on where you plan to camp/bivy. I don't know the particulars so ask them but pretty sure they are required for backcountry camping below treeline.
