Have people had good results with homemade energy gel? Is anything wrong or right with a 50/50 paste of peanut butter and honey?

(I searched briefly and didn't see a previous related thread.)

Don't forget crushed sesame seeds or other nuts with that honey/ peanut butter mix. Or a home made pemmecin meat and protein mix of stuff.

Mmmm, good idea! I love almond butter every now and then on my backpacking trips-(usually buy Justin's Maple almond butter packs) but making my own, and mixing in a bit of sesame seeds, and/or other crunchies sounds delicious. : )

I recently started running long distance and have been using brown rice syrup (BRS) or BRS cut with a little powdered Gatorade to add some electrolytes on my long runs instead of buying the commercial sports gel. BRS is a complex carb so the "kick" lasts a bit longer than simple sugars. Think the addition of Gatorade helps but the taste and texture take a little getting used to.

Have heard alot about the health benefits of BRS. Like the idea of powdered GatorAid added to the mix too. Good for flavor too.

Back when I was racing bicycles we had a team doctor who would mix up various concoctions for us even though we had a nutrition sponsor. At stage races he'd be batching stuff in the hotel room, making a hell of a mess in the process. I get way better results with the following than anything on the market:

Makes 1 liter total, mix hot water with
210 g Glucose/Dextrose
210 g Maltodextrin
200 g Fructose
1/8 - 1/4 tsp salt
1/8 - 1/4 tsp potassium salt
I drop half an orange peel in the mixture for a day or two, to add a little bit of flavor.

50 ml = 120 kcal. These tubes work really well. rei.com/product/796287/huma…

A company by the name of "NOW sports" sells the different sugars. We find them around here at Vitamin Cottage.
