Hi all, I'll be relaxing with my family in NC for most of the month of July and possibly some of August as well, and I'm looking for climbing partners for western NC. I've never climbed there, so I'm open to destinations; there are a number of climbs that look exciting, particularly in Linville Gorge and Laurel Knob. I can climb during the week and weekends. I have a car, trad rack, and single and double ropes.

Some of LInville will be climbable in July, like Hawksbill and Table Rock, but Shortoff will be pretty hot. And Laurel Knob would be insanely hot in July. The North side of Looking Glass would be a possibility, but the rest of it would probably be unbearable as well (except for maybe a quick early morning or evening climb). Check out Ship Rock too. I might be able to have you meet myself and/or some other people when you're here, but we'd be traveling from the Raleigh/Durham area and have to meet you up there.

Table rock faces east and bakes in the sun most of the day. By 4 or 5 stuff should be going in the shade. Ship Rock is nearby and probably a much better choice for mid summer.

I'm admittedly not an expert on Table Rock, but I have climbed there in July. If I remember right, we were able to start in the north end and then chase shade in the afternoon on the east facing climbs. It was hot, but nowhere near as hot as some other Linville spots would have been (NC wall, Shortoff...). I agree that Ship stays much cooler, but it still gets a lot of sun.In fact, it was pretty damn warm there just a couple of weeks ago. Hawksbill is pretty much my favorite option for summer cragging up there. Could probably check out some of the smaller crags like little Wilson and the Dump, maybe? I'm sure some of those get some shade, but I don't know them very well.

We were there two weeks ago and it wasn't so fun climbing in the sun... Agreed shortoff would be miserable. You could probably go get on the Mummy and Daddy in the ampitheatre, those seem to stay in the shade til late morning. Plan on getting an early start and still bring lots of extra water.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll reach out again once I'm down there and try to set something up. I'll have a lot of time on my hands, so I'll likely try to make it up to the New River Gorge some as well; I haven't climbed there either, but from what I've heard / read, it may be easier to find cooler climbing in the dead of the summer. - Kevin

Me and my wife will be in linville gorge area from the 5th thru the 12th. Weve been to linville once before and no the area somewhat well. We have gear but have been out of the game for a while so well probably be sticking to the kiddy slopes but would love some company. It'll be hot so well probably try to climb early morning and afternoon and spend the rest of the time soakin in the river. Were also up for some backpacking. Too so let us know if your game. Also to any locals what are the odds of us running into others hanging out by table rock this time of year?

If you go to Table Rock, just start at the north end and work your way around with the shade.
