Description Suggest change

Harlan Quarry is an old rock quarry located in the Siuslaw National Forest, in Lincoln County, within the Central Oregon Coast Range of western Oregon, near the former town site of Harlan, Oregon. James R. Harlan was the first Postmaster for Harlan, Oregon and no doubt the town and the quarry were named for him. The Harlan Quarry hosts six climbs; five of which are bolted free climbs and should be considered "sporty" traditional bolted routes. These lie on the shorter left (west) portion of the wall. There is one bolted aid route near the center of the crag. Due to the ample precipitation and vegetation on the slope above the quarry the routes are often wet or seeping and thus the season is short, from late spring through fall. The Rock at Harlan Quarry is sandstone altered by the intrusion of a basalt dike. Due to the abundant moisture and the mixed metals utilized by the route developer the bolts are in deplorable condition and in serious need of upgrading. Much of the development was done by Kevin Pogue in the 1980s, while working on doctorate in structural geology at Oregon State University, and other Corvallis climbers during a dozen visits over the course of three years.

Getting There Suggest change

Harlan Quarry is located off US Route 20, about 30 miles west of Corvallis. Turn left at Burnt Woods at the red building that was once the Burnt Woods Store and follow the Harlan-Burnt Woods Road for eight miles until reaching the former Harlan town site, then take a right on to the gravel road. Follow the gravel road for about 3 miles, past Big Elk Campground and the crag will be on your right. Harlan, OR was founded in 1890 and existed until 1968 when the US Post Office closed and the unincorporated township disappeared.
