Large stoppers, anyone use them regularly?

X2 I have 2 blacks, only 5k like a 0 or 00 cam but to me I like that it offers more expansion from a micro cam if the grain blows a bit it will still hold ( thats my thought process anyway).

Use them all the time. The DMM ones at least aren't that heavy.

I'll leave them as anchors at belays in spots, and, take the cams on the route. Depending on the crag and options, of course.

good question... I've been using cams in larger placements and also I've become really good with the TCU's in smaller cracks as well. I still use a lot of small-medium stoppers but for some reason my large stoppers seem to be going unused. Maybe, by chance, the last half dozen or so climbs I've done just didn't need them?

I don't know I guess I shouldn't eliminate them off of my rack just yet. They don't weigh that much...

I often carry doubles up to BD#10 and always have 11-13 along as well. As many have said, there's nothing more confidence inspiring than a solid placement of a big stopper!

I know this thread is about stoppers/nuts but wheres the hex love? a smallish hex is the same size as a big stopper! plus hexes make cool noises when you cow bell them together

used mine very often.

excellent way to avoid the expense of extra cams in that .75/1 camalot range, or a good way to keep those cams on your rack for a less-than-ideal stance.

of course, not a great option somewhere like indian creek.

That noise is like nails on a chalk board to me. But I do love the 'what the hell is this thing?' response you get from people who are cam dependant, when they clean them.

I got one of these t-shirts a couple of years ago:

Just don't place the black passively. It is not rated to hold falls like that. Passive tri-cams start at pink and up.

I wouldn't carry doubles of the same set. There are some gaps in the BD stoppers range. It is better to carry some WC Rocks, especially in the medium to small sizes.

I use them just about every time I go out. I like to stretch pitches as long as I can get them, so if I don't use nuts when I can, my good sized cams are gone halfway (100') through the pitch. Plus, like those above guys said, nothing feels so confidence inspiring as getting a good #13.

I would sacrifice a human baby for more DMM Torque Nuts. I haven't been leading long, but I think they kick mucho ace. And slung hexes make awesome weapons to fend-off aggressive eagles or deer. I'm talking bigger slung hexes, too, not the kind Stallone would carry on his free-solo rack.

I carry nuts up to BD #10 i think. Bigger ones have only been used few and far between so i make do without.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
