sport climbing in colorado
Making a trip threw Colorado on my way back to Vermont. Any advice on the best sport climbing spots that would have free camping. We had to sink all of our money into new batteries for our solar house so gas is about all we can afford on the way back. Paying to camp not an option! |
Monastery is amazing-no crowds either... |

It might be worth your while to spend a day or 2 in summit county. Check out white cliff mountainproject.com/v/white… you can camp for free up past keystone and while you're there, check out the climbing at around montezuma. |
The Monastary is cool, but very different and you may want to have a 70m rope for some of the routes. |

I think I post up Devils Head at least twice a month. There is a pay campground right at the base, but tons of free camping all around. Best sport climbing close to Denver. |
Rifle doesn't have free camping but it's only $5 a night and you can get free stuff if you don't mind driving a few miles down or up the road. Plenty to do at a number of grades as there are more and more moderate routes there now. There's other great sport climbing in the area with free camping so if you get the Rifle guidebook you can sample some of the other area stuff as well. |

+1 for Devils Head. |
Lime Creek camping is free. Beautiful area too. Not sure if the roads are open yet. |
Rifle has free camping if you go up the road past the pay camp ground. |
There is some free camping in the Poudre Canyon. You can hit The Palace and the Three Tiers areas for some good sport. |

Ouray is 90 min. south of Grand Junction. Pool Wall (75 routes) on hard metamorphised? sandstone, Jimmy Cliff/Overlook (limestone) and quartzite on Red Mountain Pass. Free camping and friendly locals to show you around. In the heart of the San Juan Mtns, and you could even get some corn skiing in. Short approaches and definitely no crowds. |
