Thankfully no field amputations in this case. Includes dramatic photo of the unfortunate young man. Fortunate/ unfortunate depending on how you look at it. We have not found any published reference to documented routes/ boulder problems in this immediate area, web or print. The climber described his intentions as exploratory.

Thanks! I talked with an OSMP ranger who said he'd never seen anyone climbing at the accident location either. I know I am not familiar with it.

2 questions:

Why is that one guys face obscured? Do you have undercover rescuers?

Was the dude bouldering with a helmet or is that part of the rescue?

Looks like the victim is lucky to have kept his manlihood! Yikes.

In the lower picture the person with the obscured face is either an ambulance paramedic or a firefighter. We generally would not obscure RMRG rescuer's faces, although we prefer to avoid highlighting individual RMRG members. RMRG emphasizes the team effort of mountain rescue rather than individual rescuers. No, we don't have under cover rescuers, although it is common to see rescuers in ordinary clothing working with other rescuers in the identifying blue shirts. The guy who's face is obscured, we don't easily have access to his name or contact info, so we could not timely contact him to ask for permission to reproduce his likeness. We made a judgement that it was preferable to timely publish the (slightly) obscured photo rather than to find the guy and ask his (and maybe his employer's) permission to publish the photo. FWIW, we did obtain explicit prior permission from the pinned climber prior to publishing these photos (even though you can't see his face). We make efforts to tread cautiously around privacy issues for accident victims and responders from other agencies.

We put one of our helmets on him as a precaution prior to moving the boulder.
