Hey,

I'm going to be working in Houston for the summer- been told the nearest climbing is in Austin. I'll be around mid-May until end of August. I lead 11+, I'll happily hop on a 12 if I can get my gear back, or have fun on anything easier.
I've heard there is some DWS around Austin, I'd love to give that a try. I'm also looking to find a gym to climb in somewhere in Houston. I've been learning trad this season.
I will probably only be free on weekends.

If anyone in the area wants to climb this summer, shoot me a message.

Jonny

I am sorry for you, JonnyG. Hitting Houston just in time for the summer heat. Not that Austin is much cooler and only marginally less humid. Houston is the tropics. At least Austin has climbing in-town and as close as the Elephant Buttresses are to downtown Boulder.

Locals are friendly and post mainly over here.

Hey Jonny,

Yes, the closest rock is in Austin.

DWS would be just west of Austin but there is not enough water because of the recent drought.

For trad you'll have to get out to Enchanted Rock (Erock) which is a good 5+ hours drive from Houston, but you're getting into the season where you'll get absolutely cooked out there.

For some gym time:

- Texas Rock Gym (where I set) is centrally located, textured walls, with plenty of lead, TR, and bouldering (largest gym in Texas).
- Stone Moves is on the far north-west side of town, a little smaller gym, plywood walls, but with some good people.
- Down south in League City is Space City Rock Gym (a former TRG location) which is smaller than TRG, maybe about the same size as SM. (I haven't been down there since TRG gave up the space, maybe 5 years ago or so.)

Thanks for the info. I'll swing by TRG for sure!
I've going to be living fairly close to UH and they claim to have a decent wall, ever checked it out?

Yes, the UH wall is very nice and a bit taller than TRG (~50' vs. ~32').

I didn't mention it because you have to be either a student, faculty, or staff (or a guest of one) to use it.

Nice. I'll see if I can talk them into it...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
