I'm shocked no one has mentioned the greatest camping beverage of all time

For the desert, it's gotta be Tequila straight w/ a Limon Packet on the side. The extra sodium can do you good in the harsh, dry, desert.

You can buy them at the Mexican markets.

Sigh* , oh how I miss the desert, as I'm cooped up in my tent on the beach in the pouring rain, as we speak. : ( Mmmm, tequila!

Ah, man, I used to have those limon packets and all kinds of Mexican goodies as a kid. Growing up white trash in proximity to Mexicans has its strong points, I guess. I gotta say, I'd try that mix.

Got to go w/ Mr. Gram on this one. Go with straight tequila or whiskey, find something to suit your taste and grab something decent. Or if that's how you roll, throw down and go with the Don Julio 1942.

While I almost always embrace brown liquor; for those weak of heart, you can also do peppermint schnapps and hot chocolate.

Good whiskey is nice if you have the ducats, but there are inexpensive options out there which are a suitable substitute.

Early Times is about $20 a handle, and is a pretty damn good whisky. I like good bourbons, and can endorse ET as a quality mixer and passable neat whisky (it has a mashbill similar to most bourbons, but with more rye than average, so it helps if you like ryes.)

As a bonus, it comes in a convenient 1.75 liter giant plastic flask:

This can be carried in your pocket, assuming you have a giant pocket.

If backpacking or a bivy is on the agenda, there are a host of soft flasks available. I have a platypus version that has served well on many occasions.

Cheers!

Oskar Blues makes an imperial stout called "Ten Fidy." It is 10.5% beer in a can. Tasty and worth its weight.

A mix is generally a waste of time. The best strategy is to get the cheapest, most potent, whiskey available, and lug the appropriate quantity into the woods. On occasion(when the gf is along) Nalgenes or Camelbacks full of wine work well too.

An ounce of honey shaken into the cheapest 750mL of whiskey will do wonders for the taste. We call it Elk Bite, I learned it from my dad's hunting partners. As a cheap shot/warming beverage I think it gets my vote as best bang for your buck.

Early Times!!! Glad to hear someone else likes this sh*t. It's my go-to for backpacking booze and it's "aged in oak for a taste worth the wait." For the ladies and "men" who don't drink whiskey, mix a little lemonade and water, and you have a tasty cocktail.

For a good drink recipe start with one part whiskey . . . and enjoy!

Nalgene has a nice flask for repackaging proper stuff. Definitely go for whiskey, good at any temperature.

Why you would need anything other than a bottle of Pendleton or Bulleit whiskey* on a backpacking trip is beyond me.

  • (Pendleton whisky and Bulleit Burbon, for the purists out there)
