I think this would be a great place for climbers in the area to introduce themselves and possibly schedule a group trip sometime. I've climbed with many local climbers at the gyms around town (3 great gyms in Chatt), and always love meeting others who are passionate about climbing.

I've never been to Sand Rock, but I love Foster Falls! Text me if you're looking for company on the weekends.

I just graduated from Georgia Southern this December, working for the Access Fund in Boulder, CO now, but will be back in the South this summer. NC, TN, and the Red are my favorites in the southeast

Davis,

Some questions about foster falls for ya. I've heard it's about a mile hike to the Adams campground(the free one. Can't remember the name). How far of a hike is it to the climbing area from that campground? Also, how far is it from the pay campsites to the climbing area. We are again trying to get up there this weekend but won't be there til Friday night so I'm trying to see what would work best. Is it practical to hike back to camp to eat lunch then back to the walls to finish off the day or would you pack food with you to climb. Thanks for any tips. Maybe meet up with ya this weekend. We will be hard to miss.

we always do the free camping and then hike back to the pavilion for breakfast and dinner. it wouldn't be too practical to hike back there for lunch (though, entirely possible). it's probably 10-15 mins of hiking to get to the climbing from either campsite.

when you camp at father adamz (the free site) you are already on the upper portion of the climbing loop trail. if you continue hiking down the trail you'll encounter climber access 1 and eventually 2. they deposit you down the cliff line at various points. if you do the pay camping (gucci camping) you will probably access the cliff line at the beginning near the waterfall.

lots of walking at fosters but nothing prohibitive. lots of copperheads at fosters (be vigilant). lots of rangers at fosters who like to walk to the free camp at dusk to make sure you are not partying. any alcohol needs to be on the extreme downlow. also, fill out the camping form if you do the free camping. that goes a long way to making the rangers happy.

Excellent tips. I'm normally not much of a planner but I'm bringing the baby with and she's a little more demanding about what she eats and when. Ha. Thanks again

Hi Ecessg, are you local?
Adam, father adams is primitive but you're only a 5-10 min walk from the nice bathrooms at the parking lot. Basically, there are 2 main access paths leaving the parking lot. Going left will bring you down the gorge, over a bridge, and past the waterfall. IMO, this is considered the front access.
The other path goes right around the falls, past the father adams camping trail, and eventually brings you down to the foot of the walls. If you go past where the front and back trails meet, you will eventually pass an awesome route called Jacob's Ladder. Theres an oldschool piton stuck about 30 feet up on that route.

I've never seen a copperhead at foster but they do live out there. They are not an especially aggressive snake, just give them room and they will creep away.

I've never been to Fosters but have been considering it recently... too much work, gym, and leda/lrc.

Where all around here have you climbed Davis and what type of climbing do you prefer, i.e. trad, bouldering?

Dood · · Chattanooga, TN · Joined Feb 2012 · Points: 370

Jeremy, you would love Foster if you feel comfortable climbing sport. I'm a sport climber but I'm starting to feel comfortable enough to get on trad. We're going to the OBED on Sat if anyone wants to join.

I work for part of the day but maybe another time. I'm pretty comfortable leading and don't have the cash for trad... I've really been thinkin about movin to the new or at least visiting. IDK if chatt will be too welcoming for much longer ha ha. If you've got some 70-80m rope we should goto B-rocks sometime. Super Scenic.

Hey, I haven't done any climbing in the area as I'm coming back to stay with family in the area, but do most of my climbing in gyms in Boston. Would like to try sport soon, but more comfortable with bouldering

Hey Kyle Murphy,

Did you happen to be at The Obed last weekend? Davis and I were out there and met a couple of dudes from Boulder, Co at little clear who rolled up to Del and Martes in an Access Fund vehicle. Was that you?

Goto the Stone Fort man! Its the best collection of boulders in the area and there is a guide book. If you're in georgia goto Rocktown! Take Rocky Lane on Pigeon Mountain off Chamberlain Road near HWY 339 between Lafayette and Menlo. That place is S-W-E-E-T.

Anyone want to check out Sunset Park (Chattanooga Trad Climbing) on Wednesday noon-4ish? Thursday morning might also work for me. I haven't been there before, but hear good things about it.

Dood · · Chattanooga, TN · Joined Feb 2012 · Points: 370

Hi Amy. I can say that there are some amazing trad climbs out at sunset. The climb directly under where the trail hits the cliffs is called Rusty's Crack, very cool climb with an interesting start. I would love to come out but have a final exam on wed. Do you live in Chattanooga? There's going to be plenty of trips this summer.

I'm living 2 hours from Chattanooga, near Murphy NC. It's not a bad drive. I'll be here about another month and then I'm going to the Tetons for a while. I'm usually in Chattanooga Wednesday nights so Wednesdays or Thursdays are good for me to climb there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
