Get Aquaphor and cover (think even coat) on the tattoo. Wrap it in Shrinkwrap for 6-8 hours (Nighttime is when I do it). Wake up the next morning and rinse off and pat down. continue with using Aquaphor instead of A&D for about a 1-2 weeks (you will heal much faster) then switch to unscented lotion. For those saying this doesn't work and will ruin Tats. I am sure the group of people that recommended this are much better artists than anyone you know. I refused to do this and tried it on my Forearm to heal fast so I could climb. It worked great.
+1 for Aquaphor the first two weeks, nothing even compares, then just lubriderm sensitive skin or something for another one or two. I wouldn't rap it though, a clean non-linty cotton long sleeve shirt is the best dressing for arm tats.

I was responding to Keenen's comment not yours.

Assume away since you are so good in reading into others assumptions ;)

You wouldn't be that know it all i have all the answers, the whole world should agree with my opinion but i refuse to fess up to it and will talk circles around anyone that tries to suggest anything of the sort would you.....

Just askin cuz all your responses seem to have air of snide cynicism or just some kinda attitude that makes them always seem to stand out.

Nothing like trying to be helpful and have a good attitude."That never works"!!

All sound advice. Thanks again for all the input, I was planning on lapping century crack but I guess that will have to wait...

I'll try to remember to post again in a week or so and give a progress update. I hope this little thread might be useful for anyone else in my boat given the wildly differing opinions on the subject.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,

Kevin

There is nothing wrong with wrapping it with saran wrap/shrink wrap while you are climbing till it heals properly. All its doing is helping it stay moist. Just don't keep it wrapped 24/7.

Patrick Feeney wrote:you can climb right after you get a tattoo if you want.i know this since my wife is a tattoo artist.Kevin you have nothing to worry .just if its really sunny out just put a good amount of lotion on it.nothing with a scent, since it will make it all red.and a tattoo should never peel or flake.NEVER WRAP A TATTOO IN SARAN WRAP. and to the people with a problem with tattoos(APBT and Thomas)keep your comments to yourself.you have a problem with tattoos thats your problem.if you think they are stupid i have awards and been in mags for mine, which brings money.so suck it

+1
. As for wrapping it the first day. I wouldn't wrap it over the first nights sleep. All this does is help it speed the inital healing process. I was told this by numerous well known Tattoo artists. I wouldn't wrap it after unless you can go clean it right away (climbing). Havind dirt and shit getting into would be worse than wrapping it for a 2 hour Gym session.

Id say two weeks off.Getting an infection isnt worth it the rocks will be there after your arm has healed. If not the scars will be your reminder to be patient!

Spray the entire thing with WD-40, then rinse in a swimming pool. If you do this repeatedly it will prevent all fading and make it heal faster.

I got inked on my forearm and two days later went on a five day trip to Squamish. I kept it lightly covered the whole time to protect from sun and abrasion, and aside from that just kept it really clean. No stretching, fading, etc. Unless you have hulk arms I doubt it will be an issue.

I don't know if I would get one removed once you get one. The thing is tattoo ink is about the only thing legally going under the skin not regulated by the FDA, and in most tattoo inks you don't know what they are made of.

Many inks are based on heavy metals, lead oxide, lead-chromium oxide, chromium oxide. I had a woman who worked for me, in a previous research position, she analyze what various commercially available tattoo inks were made of. On top of the heavy metals found above, she also found uranyl (uranium) oxide, and an organic pigment used by the auto industry (it was a red pigment).

As long as they are visible below the skin and not fading, the bioavailability is probably pretty low. Now it would be interesting to look at blood levels after the laser removal of a tattoo, since the organic dyes would photo-bleach but I doubt the heavy metal oxide based dyes would photo-bleach (I could be wrong).
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
