Patagonia R1 hoody or something similar
|
So I am thinking of getting a R1 hoody, but am interested in what other folks are wearing as a similar piece. I am looking for something versatile with balaclava hood and preferably thumb loops that isnt to heavy to wear while active. Let me know what you guys are wearing and why you think it's better than the R1. Thanks for the input. |

I have 2 R-1's, a first gen. that still kicks ass and one i got for x-mas last year and love'em both. The R-1 is my second got to piece, the first got to piece is a little minx down the street. |

I went to a clinic that Steve House put on a few years ago during the Ouray ice climbing festival. He brought the pack and much of the gear that he used for Himalayan ascents to that point. His clothing layers included the R1 hoody. It looked like a great functional piece of clothing... long story short I now own 2 of them and don't head to the mountains in the winter without one on. |

I'm a big fan of the R1 hoody. The OR Radiant Hybrid hoody looks pretty close except it has a full zipper, and a lighter fabric under the arms. Haven't tried it out but it looks nice. I like the pullover style though for low bulk under a harness and other layers so I went with the R1. For what it's worth, the outdoor gear lab guys said the R1 is better, but the OR is more durable. |

If they made an R1 in merino I'd buy one. Every R1 style hoody I've tried just didn't fit like an R1. |

^^^ mec hoody, polartec powderdry, 1/2 zip, thumb loops, less than 1/2 the price, made in canada |

The fit of the MEC hoodie is not the same as the fit on the Patagonia hoodie. I didn't like the way the hood on the MEC piece felt. It was not as comfortable on me as the Patagonia version. |

Another vote for the R1. I have a pullover (no hood) and have worn it on nearly every big rock climb I have ever done. You can wear it as a mid-layer or next to your skin and it fits well enough to go under a shell w/o bunching. |

Check out the Salomon Swift hoody. I absolutely love mine. It has thumb loops, finger warmers that fold up into the sleeves, a quarter zip, pocket in the back, and chest pocket. It fits snug enough to not be bulky while climbing or hiking, and layers well. Plus, it's cheaper. |

Anyone have experience with the Mammut Eiswand hoody? Curious if it's worth the big price tag and if it is even good for layering like the R1 is. |

Thanks for the input folks, a couple additional questions: |
|
Rab ps zip fits tight stretches and is windproof. Better for multi pitch than the r1 b/c of the windproof |
|
Just go R1 it is no fail piece of gear and decision. |

The new ueli steck MH style r1 hoody looks pretty awesome though pricey. |

I am a bit bigger than you and I am right between a medium and large, so the M should be perfect for you. |

How do the Salomon Swift and NW alpine spider stand against the wind? |

The Flash is a bit slimmer fit than the normal R1. I got it for sale once for $50. I got the Hangfire Hoody for $50 as well. I weigh 145lbs and am 5'10" and have a medium R1 and a large Hangfire Hoody. The R1 is super-durable. However, I actually prefer the Hangfire Hoody. The FA piece just fits me disturbingly well. That being said, it's more complicated. Three different pockets and tons of varying materials and stitching is just more opportunities for failure. One of the main reasons I wear it over the R1 is that the R1 just seems to bunch up anything I wear beneath it, while the FA piece has full zip and goes over a base layer extremely well. I don't think you can go wrong with the R1. Check out your local Eddie Bauer store, though. They were having clearance and that's when I picked up the hoody for half off. A word of warning: the medium will definitely not fit you. I'm skinny as a rail, and I needed a large. |
