There will indeed be a Vermont rock guidebook released this spring. You can get a little preview here: vermontrock.com/. The author Travis Peckham has put untold amounts of effort in to the project, and the book looks absolutely awesome.

As for gems, there are many. The Rose is certainly among them, especially if one is partial to sustained, overhanging hands and fists...

Cheers,

Derek

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely be buying this when it comes out.

Yeah, looks cool. I'll keep an eye out for the book. Also want to encourage Mr. Peckham to consider a mobile app for the guidebook - I'm willing to pay just as much as for the book, and I don't like having to carry around (and/or forget) the book itself!

Thanks for the feedback (and the kind words, Derek). Things are moving forward well and we're on track for a spring release.

I'm considering a mobile-app eBook format, but probably won't be released for a while since our first big push will be to get the books out there and out of my basement :-)

Cheers!

On a related note- if you're interested in updates on the book's release, preorders, etc. you can "like" Vermont Rock Press on Facebook. We'll be posting updates there as we get closer to print (hopefully very soon).

Thanks!
T.

You're most welcome, Trav. All of your hard work is about to pay off (metaphorically at least...). Thanks!

Thanks, Derek. Yes, the book will be available for sale on the web site after we get it back from the printers. We'll start taking preorders in a few weeks.

Been waiting for this for so long! Hope it's out in time for the upcoming season!

At this point, I'm hoping to have it back from the printers by late spring. I really wanted it printed by March (now), but these things always wind up taking longer than you think.

The route descriptions, photos, topos, etc are completely finalized and we're well into doing the layout. Never having written a guidebook before it's hard to know exactly how long each step will take, but I'm really hoping to have it out there for people to use this season.

Thanks for all the positive interest everyone!

Geographically, are there any areas in the central and southern zones of VT? I'm near Albany, so northern VT is a bit of a haul and doesn't make a lot of sense with the ADKs and Gunks much closer...

[help make a case for me to buy the guide, as I'd like to check out some new climbing areas within a day's drive! :) ]

Hi Kevin,

Most of the areas in the book are in the northern half of the state, but there are a few as far south as Rutland. Admittedly, it's not a short drive from Albany.

The Gunks and the Dacks are pretty hard to beat. We have some nice rock up here if you're looking for a change of scenery, but we're not as close as those places.

Thanks Travis. Maybe we'll luck out and catch some rock in your neck of the woods on our way to New Hampshire sometime (now that we know it's there). Will likely buy the guide anyway just to help support local climbing. :)

Hey Trav-

Any updates on the ETA for the book?

Hey Derek,

It looks like we still have a bit of tweaking to do on the layout though all of the chapters have a preliminary draft built with images, topos, etc. It still needs some polish though. It also looks like the printing might get backed up behind the dreaded highschool yearbook printing season which might also result in a bit of a delay.

We're working hard on it, but it still looks like it might be another month or two. Wish I could have it sooner. Once it's gone off to the printers, we'll make an announcement and start accepting pre-orders on the Vermont Rock web site.

Hey Trav,

Any updates? I've been fielding a ton of questions about the new book lately, and would love to be able to offer some actual info!

Cheers,

Will the guide book have any nichols ledge routes in it?

Nope. Nichols has always looked like a dirty, loose pile to me, albeit in a very nice spot. Have you climbed anything worthwhile there?
