Until getting paid for being a moderator, it's a volunteer position and you'll have to take it as such when framing your expectations

I was writing a lab report, but here I am again.

How'd it go?

Exactly. If you came up to my friends and I in a bar (or any social situation), and started talking insultingly negative bullshit, it wouldn't fly. Why is it any different in a written forum?

Much of the negative stuff here, if someone said it to your face in a bar, would either be fighting words or would be really difficult to take and respond to positively.

just a rough draft, pretty crummy, I have all of break to revise it though. 12 pages of shit about gibberellin and seed germination. intro science classes are so tedious.

That's all I write on this site is gibberellin... Good luck!

I have no problem with difference of opinion, with you disliking someone, or even with you being upset by something that was posted that you feel is misguiding the noobs (zomg, PAS!!!!). The only thing I have a problem with is the tone, words chosen, and nasty attitude that is plastered all over these types of posts. As if that person is somehow "justified" in getting as nasty and uncivil as possible. Yuck. Mods, +1 to what the OP said. TY and keep up the good work.
Agree 100%, and I suspect this is the view of the "silent majority" on this site. Having pretty much given up on the forums due to the volume of vituperative vitriol, I am really pleased with the new policy. In the past, MP has been a high-quality climbing site with a supportive user group, but of late it has been dominated by posters who seem less interested in offering credible contributions to the climbing community than in attacking others in a blatantly offensive manner. Mods, thanks for enforcing Rule #1 -- it greatly improves the MP experience!

How about a douchebagometer/awesometer feature?

Have a like/dislike button on each post. If a post is disliked more than liked and that difference exceeds some predetermined ratio, 8 to 1 for example (50 votes minimum) then the post gets banished to the Douchenozzle Hall of Fame thread. You can go there to peruse all the finest examples of MP's libelous smacktalk and insultery. A placeholder will remain in the original post, with a link to DHoF thread.

On the flipside, if a post is liked more than disliked by 8 to 1, then that post is featured in the Golden Glory thread (it will also remain in the original post, but the text will now be gold or something). There you can read MP's most humorous tales, best TRs, and what not.

The number of likes/dislikes can be aggregated for each thread as well, giving a rough indicator of the overall quality of thread. A very low like:dislike ration will trigger a Douchenozzle warning alert attached to such threads; a very high like:dislike ratio triggers a "This Sh#t is Golden" flashing icon of delight next to those threads.

Likewise, likes and dislikes can be aggregated by user, so next time you get flamed by a pro foamer (that's a rabid dog btw - lots of those around here) you can see their astronomical D-Bag levels and take their snarling assault with a grain of salt. Or if you're considering foaming all over some sweet gentle grandma who asks a PAS question, maybe you'll pull back when you witness the amazing height and glare of her Golden Bar of Approval (a like:dislike status bar in the sidebar), while yours is negative and the color of kidney stone tea. If your contributions are disliked by, again, an 8:1 ratio, your profile pic will be automatically changed to one of Santorum (man or substance? you don't get to choose). Meanwhile, if people love what you've got to say and your great photos, by 8:1, you will get a free maximum-quality jpeg chosen by Killis, 20 feet of golden webbing, and wait... AND your posts will automatically appear on SuperTopo, so that legends and people in California can become witnesses.

Let's rate the posts. We love rating things.

That's my suggestion.

Pure...genius! Fun and functional. The carrot > the stick.

When other posters lash out against you because your posts are way off topic, dramatically successive, and almost incomprehensible at times, it's because reading some of your posts is actually uncomfortable. I'm sincerely not trying to be a dick and attempting to make what I think is a valid point. To you, these posts are just light-hearted fun. To others, it's painful. However, you don't see it like that. You question why all the ill will. They question why all the drivel that interrupts the flow of what was a great thread. The point is that it's all subjective, and a matter of perspective. To paint everyone else as the bad guy and yourself as the constant victim is a little obtuse. Everyone could work on the value and pertinence of what they post, as well as their behavior and perceived attitude of their words. You're no exception.

This post illustrates one pet peeve of mine:

Posting as if texting.

As in purely personal communication.

Maybe we can all agree that if two folks want to have a dialogue (Ellenor & Mutton?), maybe they can use the PM function and not clutter up a thread.

If everybody on MP (thousands) did this texting inane details thing, the forums would collapse. I really don't care if you are doing a lab report or whatever. Sure you might think we are all so interested in you, but the truth is NOT.

I don't post "making dinner, blah blah"

So please consider this carefully.

If you think you can refrain from posting whatever happens to be on your mind

IN A PUBLIC FORUM

then I'm good with that, but when you take up so much of the airwaves,

it's fair enough to PM you and express my concerns with what you are doing with OUR (you, me and everyone else's) FORUM.

Edit: add quote.

If you like to complain so much, mr finger, than perhaps you shold find a better place to do that. This is not your personal grivence page and you are just as insulting as many of the people whom you are deriding. Serial posting? How many defensive statements have you written in the last two days? Sounds like you are the one serial posting these days, nice work on exemplifying the behavior you complain about.

My take on it is to not become RC.troll and I'm all for that, that site sucks and has for a long long time and this database is worth keeping around. If you want a lame forum to hang out in all day go to supertaco and get top posted every minute by ken nichols fans.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
