When I climb with you

It gets better: When I climb with you:

When I climb with you, I feel safe. Not that I don’t feel safe with my other friends — that would be ridiculous. And it’s not that you always triple-check my knots every time, even though I clearly know what I’m doing. It’s not that you’re strong and knowledgeable. (Though that is nice.)

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure how to articulate what I mean.
But when I climb with you, I have confidence. Confidence that I’ll make the next hold. That you won’t judge me.

When I climb with you, I’m at peace. My mind is still and free from anxieties, so I’m able to see things that I’d otherwise miss. I can fully dedicate myself to the climb.
When I climb with you, I’m more aware of my body. My balance and foot placement are better. I remember that I’m strong.

When I climb with you, I feel your presence in the rope. That tangible connection strengthens and solidifies everything tenuous between us. When I climb with you, I am the best of me. I can believe that the words ‘take’ and ‘got’ are enough to make up for all that I never say.
And at the top of the wall, when I lean back and trust you, I am strong enough to let my idea of us go. To fall, and untie.

When I climb with you.
