Isn't it reasonable to think about a worst case in a situation like this?

Do you climb multi-pitch routes? Envision this situation: you're five pitches up an alpine route and your leader takes an upside-down fall rendering her unconscious. Let's say you're climbing with a 70m rope and she's 55m up the pitch. You have no cell phone service; no one else is around. What are you going to do?

Your rescue is going to be very complicated. Provided you have the right materials, you're going to have to prussik up your weighted lead line; build an anchor when you get to your climber; somehow get her limp body onto the anchor; then rappel five pitches with an unconscious person.

At least in the case of this rope swing, there's somebody above the jumper with a rope that can affect a rescue via rappel.

I think you're trying to paint rope jumping as more dangerous than climbing. I also think you failed. But maybe I missed something and you can enlighten me.

Marc,

Were they up on a multi-pitch climb?

Nope.

Dont make the situation here more than it is, lets talk about their situation.

Could this situation be safer?

Yes

I don't care what people do with their time, it is theirs to spend. But if we share information, we can make situations safer for everyone.

Do answer your questions Mark:

I do multi-pitch climb.

I am not going to give you a play by play about what I would do if my leader was knocked out.

I wasn't expecting a play-by-play. I was trying to show you that rope jumping isn't more dangerous than climbing can be.

I don't necessarily agree with everything that a unique climbing accident committed on the wall would be applied here, but it is a good idea to think about a pre-plan to do a buddy pick-off. I don't have a problem with lowering a rope just to get someone down that can help themselves.

If someone does get jacked, just plan to get the incapacitated person on the deck as fast as you safely can. You can do it either as a rap-rescuer or lower-rescuer. If you can pre-rig and pre-stage the buddy rescue for each jump, that'd be cool, save you a bunch of time instead of freaking out and running around like a chicken with its head cut off; probably be a little bit safer as well.

Communication could be a problem. Maybe think about dedicating a couple of radios on their own channel. Maintaining mental composure for rescuer safety and also be able to work effectively when your buddy just got hammered will be difficult; doesn't really matter how much experience anyone may have, even as a professional.

So my thoughts are to pre-plan, think about communication, and utmost, keep anyone else from becoming a would-be rescuer statistic if the shit really hit the fan.

Overall, I think this rope swing stuff is kick ass, the initial point of mis-information was corrected, the rigging and anchor are sweet to me, happy sailing!

holy shit my palms are soaked after watching that...

I'll stay out of the debate otherwise!

And, no, I don't think I would do it. Maybe ten years ago.

We have the world's highest (controlled) free-fall here in Vegas at the top of the Sratosphere. It's fun watching the professional riggers at work. and peoples' expressions, from the "I'm a bad ass, and can't wait to jump, to the. "I think I might be changing my mind, can I have a refund?" type person .

Hilarious, showed a guy at work this video, he says "they look like a bunch of theater douchebags."

This will be inflammatory, but did you really need to ask "How are we douchbags?" Well there's no way to say for sure, except for the obvious. dancing, kissing, close ups of laughing, group hugging, i mean come on kiddies. oh and nice track jacket, is that leather, classy.

Nice vid otherwise, looks likely to end in disaster though either through policy or injury.

Yes, I wasn't going to go there, but "theater douchebags" is a good way of putting it. Now that I know they are from Utah, "repressed Mormon virgins who try to stay edgy by dressing like 2004-era hipsters" is another way of putting it.

No, it won't.

Virginity is depressing and can lead to terrible ideas, like getting married at 18.

The biggest swing is in NZ but I don't have a link.

You must have a pretty sad and boring life to call these guys (people that are smiling and having fun with friends) douchbags, atleast they are happy. You should try making some friends and doing perfectly rigged stunts yourself. You might come out of your hole and stop hating on people that are having fun. However, this advice is coming from a non-egotistical person, so it may not work for you.

totally non egotistical with those pictures of yourself, and my hole is awesome so i think i will just hang out, thanks for the advice though cutie. i actually wasn't the one who said it, it was from another post, and my co-worker. but the op asked "how are we douchbags" so i gave a few reasons one might think that, and i think its pretty obvious why. again though thanks bud
