"OK, this got my attention. In less than 10 days counting back from today I got reports of 3 pairs of bent, broken or cracked Black Diamond Stainless crampons.
Call me cynical but it was exactly this time last year that the same thing happened...actually within days of each other one year apart. Over a dozen cracked or broken pairs of Black Diamond stainless crampons popped up over the last year. But 3 in a row, in mid Feb 2012! Again?!"
If you really want to get your BD hate on, here is a subject with substance. Not some silly little screw breaking without notice, full blown catastrophic failures that are ignored by BD.
Last year I decided to stop buying BD products and this is the reason.
This discussion has been going on for a while over on GravSports-ice. My friend's BD Sabertooth crampons had fractures in them just the other day and he just returned them to MEC (pretty much Canadian REI). They disappeared from the store and no one knows what happened to them. Kinda disconcerting. Seems BD is blatantly ignoring the problem even with lots and lots more showing up. To see the pics on gravsports I think you need an acct.
BD has been designing great products and I've always had great customer service from them. Trying to stay objective (although I bet the barn on my stainless sabertooths), it simply does not make sense for BD to sweep this enormous liability under the rug.
Till I hear back from them, I'm keeping a close eye on my pons and using my vertical FP pons as much as I can get away with.
I own a pair of pre-stainless cyborgs and sabertooths. I'm certainly not buying new BD crampons because of this thread. Are you listening Black Diamond? Please fix the product.
