We now have a 1984 Skyline camper which has been all over Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah! Would be nice to get the heater working but everything else works great.

Looks similar to this one.

SCAMP Trailers are awesome

When I was young, my family moved west from New England to New Mexico. My Dad bought a pop-up tent trailer for the move. We spent a month going across the country to California and back to New Mexico, camping in national and state parks.

It was a family of two adults, seven children and a dog. The older kids had their own pup tents to sleep in and the two youngest slept in the trailer with Mom and Dad on one of the two almost queen sized beds. Setup was minimal and all the cooking/camping supplies fit in boxes in the trailer, leaving us to be crowded in the station wagon.

It worked fine in wet and dry conditions, in hot and cold. It was one of the formative experiences in my life. My opinion: It's a fine way to go and you can use the money you save to stay a little longer or go a little farther.

We have a pop-up truck camper and absolutely love it. Mounted on a truck you can go anywhere (see photo), they are low profile and light, and mpg doesn't decrease much. Ours sleep four (one queen size bed and one sort of full) but that would be tight with all adults, but as a family no problem. We have a heater, three-burner stove, fridge and freezer (yeah nothing beats having ice cream at the Creek after a day climbing!!!). We opted to not have a toilet for obvious reasons, but we do have an outside shower.

Our camper works great even in the winter. We have taken it to Ouray, Montana and Cody ice climbing several times.

As far as I am concerned, it was the best investment we ever did!!!!!!

Another nice thing about Hallmark pop-ups......they make a really small one that fits on a small truck like Toyota Tacoma. So you don't "need" a real truck!!!!!!

A tow behind will limit where you go significantly!!!!

That's an awesome outfit, Mia.
We have a small tow-behind, and it has its benefits, but would prefer a good (heavy canvas) pop-up outfit like yours (and that truck'll do nice too!).

Umph....... Thanx

I think three main reasons were the deciding factor for us in camper choice:

1. Initially we looked at a tow behind but we like to hit too many areas that require 4x4 and/or where towing isn't practical or easy.
2. We didn't want to sacrifice mpg too much. The addition of our pop-up (compared to hard-side or many tow-behinds)is it only lowered the mpg by 2.
3. We wanted insulated non canvas soft sides so we can camp in snowy and wet conditions.

Also, the pop-up is electric....... Hit a button and lid goes up or down, no cranking issues.

Which one did you get?

We have the Guanella. It fits long or short bed. Looks better on a short bed in my opinion. It does work on a F-150 (thats what we used to have), but bigger is of course better (now we have a F-350).
The Ute is pretty nice, one size up, may be better for a family of four......but I still wouldn't do the inside toilet......

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
