I've tried several times to download the "Boulder" area, and it has failed every time. I've tried it on several different wireless networks, in case that might make a difference. I successfully downloaded a smaller area.

Any suggestions?

@AndroidWanters: Nick and I are playing with an early release of Android. It is probably still a few months away, but it is coming!

@Rich: Have you tried deleting the data (More Options on the bottom) and reinstalling. Just curious.....

Using iPhone app (Build 15).

Two things would be really useful for me:
(1) Organizing downloaded areas by state, or even by self-defined groups. E.g., I live in MA, and there a dozen small areas on my phone. It'd be great not to have to scroll through those when I'm headed to NH. Even better, it'd be nice to be able to lump things into Metro Boston, Western MA, etc in groups or folders

(2) An "update all" button that would just update all the areas I've downloaded at once, so I could easily do this when I'm someplace with good wireless.

Thanks for all the work on the app, it's a very useful tool!

I'm pretty sure I did before I tried to reinstall it the last time. I believe the app came with the Tetons for free, and that isn't there anymore which leads me to believe I clicked the "delete all data" button. Which leads to another question -- is that really the only option (deleting all of it). If I eventually download multiple areas, and then decide I want to delete just one, do I have to delete it all and start over? Seems unlikely, so maybe I just haven't ever had two areas installed to see that more options appear...

Anyway, assuming I had deleted before trying to reinstall, any other thoughts?

Several times in Red Rock out of cell service, it would not allow me to use the app. It says unable to validate, or something like that. It's pretty useless if I can't use it when out of cell service around here. I also usually go to airplane mode when in the canyons to save battery in case of emergency. In those cases, even though I have everything in the phone and paid for the app, I can't use it.

Maybe I am doing something wrong.

The update fixes this bug. Hopefully :)

Finally got it to download tonight. Not sure what made the difference.

Thanks for all the hard work on the app! Psyched to check it out.

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to a 4s. Everything transferred OK except the Mountain Project app. It perpetually shows "Loading" under the App icon and a very short progress bar that never moves. Tried deleting it from iTunes Library and Synching - no luck. Tried deleting it on the phone under Settings->Usage, doesn't show up as an app. Looking in "Purchased" in the iTunes store on the phone shows it as "Installing."

Help!

Some things to try:
  • Just let it sit there "installing" for a long time (an hour or more) if you have downloaded a huge amount of data. There is a chance the database structure changed and it's re-importing it.
  • In this order: go to airplane mode. Click app once (don't hold). It should let you delete. if not, reboot while in airplane mode and try to delete again (first by single click; if that fails, hold-click).
  • If still stuck: on computer, delete from itunes app library, turn OFF the setting called "transfer purchases from phone", reboot phone, connect to computer, sync apps.

If none of those work, contact me directly.

I would love to see the "find routes for you in this area" function in the app, where one can search specifically for routes of a certain rating, grade, and length.

On my install, search just sits and runs and never returns anything; I always end up having to kill the app and relaunch. Anyone else have this problem?

I believe having the ability to be more interactive with your profile while on the go would be a major plus.
For instance, load photos from phone to your profile to then post to the appropriate location on MtnPrjct later, "Ticking" a route while on the go, or changing routes on ToDo list.

Overall making the App a bit more interactive would be sweet.

my app seems to be a little messed up. In the info boxes the text is really spaced out, and when i tap it, it shows like one or two words more but not the whole thing. Anyone else having this problem? i redownloaded it. that didnt seem to work.

First of all: Awesome app! So useful! The below are a couple of things I would love to see get added.

Classic Routes: I would love it if there were a button that downloaded all the photos for the classic routes in a specific sub-location. This would be very handy for when I am roadtripping and want to get an idea of what kind of climbing each route is. I understand that downloading all photos for an area like J-Tree would be too much, but it would be nice if you could have the option to download all the classic route photos.

My Areas: It would be awesome if we could have a favorites section up top that we could add to and then the rest would be alphabatized. I know there is a search function but sometimes you just want to scroll the list and it would be nice for it to be in some order. The favorites area up top would allow you to put the places you view most in prominent view.

Updates: An update all button would be really handy as it is a bit of a pain scrolling through to hit the update button on each one.

Tiering of Route Areas: This is most often an issue when you click on a route that is in the classics section. It often doesn't have a description on how to get to the base of the climb, simply instructions to follow the approach to the area. By clicking arrow directly above the name you can see what the area is called but it would be nice if it were clickable and would bring you to that area so you could figure out the approach beta.

Photo Downloads: I would, as a poster mentioned above, love to download just the beta photos for an area. I often times find myself on a spotty edge connection clicking on photos and hoping this one has a topo drawn on it. This is annoying and I would love to just be able to download photos that are tagged as beta photos. Right below the download all photos button you could have one that is named download all beta photos. Would also save you some bandwidth and me some space on my phone.

To-Do List: I love this feature! What would make me love it more is if I had the option to download all photos for the items on my to-do list. This would allow me to use it as a que for downloading photos of the climbs I most care to look at. Again, saves bandwidth and space on my device. Would make the roadtrips to my latest climbing vacations filled with making to-do lists and then simply pulling into a wi-fi spot and hitting the download photos button. Another option is allow me to bookmark those climbs that I wish to do and then give me a download all photos button on the bookmarks.

Length: I don't know why this isn't visible. This is pretty crucial beta IMO as often times they don't include it in the description because they believe that they have already stated it.

Photos and Routes: I would love to be able to take pictures and add them to the database directly from the app. I know this has been already discussed, but with the proliferation of iPhone 4's and 4s's that have great cameras I think you would get some decent shots. More info for would be ascentionists is usually always helpful. I'm not sure I'm in favor of adding routes on my phone though because I feel that this would lead to much less thought in the posts. Possibly though institute a yelp like system where you could start a review on your phone and finish it on the computer at MP.com. This would allow for you to get down key details and then flesh it out on a real keyboard.

Okay I'm done for now. I'll think of more things as I use it and am excited for the next version! Thank you for creating it and I hope none of these comments sound overly negative as the point was to give help not criticism. Hopefully you can make it through the novel that is this post.

I want to add this app to my phone, which is just a regular phone from ATT. Is it available.

I used it for a trip to red rocks recently. I tested it as our only guide for a few days, but ended up suplementing with a guide book as well. The major reason was lacking directions to the start of routes. Being completely new to the area, I found the directions to be pretty vague sometimes. Area maps or better area descriptions or photos looking up from the base of the climb should be somehow separately accessible.

And as everyone else said, some way to filter the useful photos from the non-useful photos. Also a way to delete all of the downloaded photos after you are finished with an area.

Now the really killer functionality would be a way for users to add info back into the database through the app. If you are offline it would need to store that info and upload it the next time you check in. Imagine if you could take a photo of a route, or someone else's photo and use the touch screen to tap out belays and connect them with the appropriate lines making it into a topo. Iphons have GPS data which can be super handy. Also, if route's had a some kind of user approved topo, photos could be tagged by where they are on the route as well. Basically it needs a framework to better sort the pile of data that could be available.

Love it.

One issue: when downloading photos on the iPhone, if the screen goes to "sleep" the download errors out. This is a problem for large areas (e.g. downloading all the images for Indian Cove Campground in Joshua Tree). The only way to get it to work is to keep your finger on the screen and keep wiggling it to keep the screen awake.

I love the app, although I am having the same issue as JohnHump with the spacing of lines. I downloaded it to use at the creek this past week and because of this issue it was pretty much useless. Kind of a bummer. I do have an itouch and was wondering if this might be the issue? Anyway, I tried to uninstall and reinstall, and nothing changed. I would really love to use it though, if anyone has a fix to this issue. Thanks!
