Climbing with strangers

Johny Q wrote: Probably a bit of both, but let me ask you this: If we can just for a second disregard the concern for your ego, which one will be more memorable and long lasting? My ego? I dont have much of an ego. That's for sure. This has nothing to do with me on a personal level. Im not sure how you were raised but I was raised to appreciate people who are out there to help others, and to also take my own time to help others when my own skills can benefit another human being. The person who took the time out of their day to spend it with me and teach me a couple of things that I would take and expand upon will make a much larger impression on me then some buffoon who chose to attempt to belittle me and my attempt at learning how to climb safely. The person coming out of that with a bruised ego is the person doing the belittling. They may not know it at the time, but they will one day. Ive said my peace here. Every time someone here types a sensible reply you tear it apart trying to find the negatives. Im sorry you act that way and I feel bad that you feel the need to do so. There is a massive difference in being a thorough person, and an instigator. Im not really sure I care what grade you climb, if your the next best thing of the sport, or if you cant lead 5.4. It makes no difference to me in the least bit. I dont care if you've never climbed a bit in your life, your still a human being and unless your a murderer or a arsonist or some other type of criminal, you still deserve to be respected. So with all the respect in the world, we can sit here and go back and forth for a year, in the end....In my mind, My opinion is based upon the general rules of society and being a giving and contributing member of such. And I'm sure its the same for you in your own mind. Goodbye. Be safe. Climb well! Edit: Does anyone here know if there is an ignore feature on this forum? Ive never wanted to use that on any of the forums I frequent to learn new things and offer my advice, but at this point, I think I may. But I cannot find such a feature in the control panel. I have no need to review posts made by an "egotistical" person Like Johny Q. And yes that is in quotes. |

Then why do you keep writing manifestos that drag on and attempt to insult me? Why are you unable to keep from responding to my trolls? Your words and actions are not matching up. Your ego does rule you and that is obvious. The first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem. |

so I figured I would resurrect this thread since I was in this predicament once again due to my boyfriend's recent surgery. I think that Planet Granite has a great idea of announcing overhead for people seeking top rope or lead partners. I think it totally breaks the ice and instills confidence that the person is in fact capable of belaying at least by the gym's standards. I happened to be in town and ran into a girl I knew by a lucky accident. Even though I presented myself as a confident climber people were somewhat sketched out about my abilities as a belayer...i think.. If the gym announced people looking for climbing partners for the day I think that inhibition would be more put to rest so to say. |

Holy smokes, where did that watermelon helmet picture come from? It must be hosted on the dying hard drive archives of rec.climbing or some Hungarian mirror site. |

I usually climb with my wife, however she's been busy lately so I went to the rock gym alone the other day assuming i could easily find a belay. So, i seen a guy standing around and asked "hey bud, mind giving me a belay?" His response, "sure". Me, "cool, everything's all good right, you know how to belay" him "don't worry i got a GriGri and it will catch you if i don't". needless to say, i ended up in the boulder room. |

There should never be 2 people at the gym on autobelays. Never. Use your social skills and be open to climb with new foulks. You may learn something. And what's wrong with gri gri catching your fall?! |

Colonel Mustard wrote: Absolutes are hardly ever right. For instance: If you want to catch me for 10 laps of up/down climbing without fair play in return, be my guest.I disagree. Climbing on auto belay takes off 10 % of body weight so essentially it is cheating. If I belay you on 10 you should belay me on 10 in return. Fair game! |
|
Wrong. I have an hour and some change at the gym. If I can spend almost all that time bouldering, traversing, and doing the auto belay, I got far more out of it than spending half my time belaying somebody who is concerned with the issue of possible auto belay assist. |
