Help with Public/Ground transportation to get to Red Rocks from airport

I just got hired at an airline, and thus have flight benefits. I'd like to plan out a trip that would allow me to fly from Minnesota (MSP) to Vegas and climb in Red Rocks.

So far, here's what I've got:

Fly in to McCarran.
Take the RTC Bus (#206) to Red Rock Station on Charleston.
Walk to the park.

Trying to find a solution to the whole "walk to the park" part of this trip (~ 3 miles?). Any ideas?

Taxi... Hitch Hike... or make friends with a local?

If you get off the bus near Desert Rock Sports on Charleston, you might find a ride AND a partner.

Zach - Perhaps you are aware...maybe not. The 206 bus does not launch from the airport. You will have to take another bus to catch the 206. There are a couple of options, but your best and quickest way to get to west side Whitey World and beyond is to catch the Westcliff Airport Express at McCarren.

Here is link to RTC schedule for Westcliff-Airport Express (WAX)

You can take the WAX to W. Charleston (Durango to Ft Apache). Transfer here to 206 and on to RR Station Casino. From RRSC, you can probably get a relatively cheap cab to campground...or walk about 3 miles.

McCarren Airport and RTC don't make it easy. Most airport employees, even those at the Info kiosk, won't have a clue where to send you to catch the WAX bus. Be persistent.

When we were there a few months ago we rented a jeep liberty for $20 a day... pretty crazy how cheap rentals are so thats an option. Like everyone else said red rocks would be hard to do without a car its kinda spread out.

From what company did you get your rental? I'm heading out in a few weeks and the best rate i've been able to find on a small SUV is 30.00 per day plus fees.

Thanks for all the replies!

I don't have a date on when I'll be out there next. I'm hoping that it will be within the next month or so.

And yes, what rental car company, dorseyec? A car would be nice for the loop

Car rentals fees vary wildly based on the percentage of cars of a certain class they have reservations for - it really doesn't matter at all which company. Its always worth monitoring as many rental companies as possible as far in advance as possible.

For instance, I just rented a car for next weekend at LAX for $10/day with Enterprise. On another weekend, it could be $40/day or more. I bet demand was low especially on Sunday because most folks don't travel during the Superbowl. Try to pick low demand times and you'll get a better deal.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
