A better ways to keep track of routes you've done?

Coeus wrote: It is definitely a semantic debate, but ever since I started climbing, I always defined a tick as a route I completed on lead, or swinging leads without falls. This means for me on a multi pitch route you have to go all the way. When it is multi pitch season, I often go months without ticking things because I don't meet these criteria. I know that everyone defines a tick differently and uses the tick feature differently, however, I always thought that my definition was something that climbers agreed on. I am curious about others thoughts on the definition of a "tick." EDIT: Even though I don't use the tick feature, I might be more interested in using it if there were a couple of other categories for logging routes. 1. Routes you have been on, but are works in progress (Adam's situation, or a route you are projecting). 2. A place to log repeats of routes you have already done (would be nice for tracking training sessions at the crag) Thoughts?
I agree with your definition of what a "tick" is. Personally I do use the tick feature, but I just use it to document the climbs I do in any style (not necessarily a true tick). I then use the comments to add what style I climbed it in (onsight, redpoint, hangdog, TR, whatever). Also, if I didn't top out on a multipitch, I'll add the number of pitches I did climb there as well. Personally I don't care if other people see my ticks or not (i'm not a good enough climber to spray anyway), but I do think that it would be nice to be able to hide them if you wanted to.

I don't use RC.com's "record ascent" feature because of their horrible route database (along with the fact that I don't spend much time on there anymore), but I do think that it is vastly superior to MP's tick feature. I love that when you record an ascent on RC, you have a dropdown to record the style you climbed it in, it has you rate the climb for difficulty, safety, and quality right there, and still allows for notes. I also like that you can read all of the ascent notes on a route to get beta if you are looking for it.

If MP would implement something like RC's record ascent feature instead of their tick feature I would absolutely love it.

It might be a nice feature to be able to select whether your tick was an onsight, flash, redpoint, toprope, or hangdog. Not only would this help you keep track of your climbing feats, but would also help others get a better idea of your true abilities when searching for partners.

EDIT: kennoyce beat me to it, but that's exactly what I'm talking about. Personally I only add ticks to route that I've climbed on lead without falling, but I know some people consider a tick any route that they've been on, whether they've sent it or not.

Love the new tick breakdown. One suggestion or request. With the graphs/charts, would it be possible to make it so that when you hover over a section of it, clicking on it would sent you to a list of what climbs are made up that section of the graph. For example if I click on the 5.9 bar of the ratings bar graph, it would show the list of 5.9 climb ticks that make up that bar. Or if I clicked on the trad section of my pie chart, it would only bring up climbs that were categorized as trad climbs. Thanks in advance for considering it.

+1

I keep clicking on those hoping that would happen!

Okay, now you can click on any of the columns and see which routes make up the data. For example, see which 5.9 routes are in that column, or which routes you did last October. It works for all four column charts (but not the two pie charts).

Here's my page, but it will work for all of you (that have ticks).

Hey Nick, any recourse for those of us who have always used the star ratings as our 'ticks'?

It'd be sweet to see similar charts/tables based on star ratings, if that wouldn't be a headache to pull off...

The rating itself (how many stars) would be irrelevant. Just a simple yes/no. If we rated it at all, we ticked that climb.

All I have to say is... Fuck Ya!

I have been clicking those bars expecting this to happen for months knowing full well that it wouldn't work.

Any chance that the pie charts will work in the future?

FYI the charts don't work when using the site in the browser of a Kindle Fire.

Very nice.

Slight bug: Clicking on the "+" routes in the "Rock Routes by Grade" chart displays all of the ticks for all grades. (At least on my charts: 5.10+ and 5.11+—I can't climb 5.12+ so I can't tell you about that.)

Thanks Perin, it's fixed!

Other questions:
- I'd be surprised if things DID work on a Kindle...
- Pie charts: doubtful, since the returned data is just so huge. and I don't think that data is as useful
- Sirius, sorry, not going to accomodate your personal use case.

This stuff is great! Fits MY needs just fine. (I tick if I was on it and code in who/how it went. If I wanted more, maybe I'd export it to a spreadsheet and fine tune it.) These latest features to search the bar graphs is great and answers my curiosity. Any chance (next snowy day?) to be able to scroll the tick list "LAST 3 YEARS" to prior 3 year periods? (I got bored on snowy days a few years ago and put some of my old stuff in, and it would be just plain fun to look at those years too.)

As to the privacy issues, it appears that those who don't want sombody to see what they've climbed aleady don't tick. No big deal. It's a public site. I don't see the problem.

Keep up the good work.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
